Will not go outside by herself
We have a 10 month old Pembroke. She refuses to go outside by herself. If we put her out, she spend the entire time trying to get back inside. No exploring or playing on her own. This also means that she will not ask to go outside for bathroom breaks. We have to take her out regularly for that reason. Any ideas? Thanks.

*~* I have 2 sister 10 month old Pembroke Corgi puppies. Their names are: Midnight & Sunshine How long have you had her ? ~~~rewind~~~ May I ask you what her name is...first ?? I think that you are doing okay by taking her outside frequently ! Midnight & Sunshine do not tell me that they have to go, "potty outside". I do the same thing that you do ! I take them BOTH outside every 3 hours when they are inside for awhile. *~* Nikki

Hi there, and Welcome!
I don't think that is is unusual that she wants to come back inside with you, plus, she is still young. My dogs are 9 & 12 years old, and they do not often like to be out in the yard alone very long. Not that that don't like the yard, it's just that they would rather be with me, it might be the same for Chole, she wants to ne with you. If you spend some time outdoors with her, while she starts to explore, she may eventually like to do it alone some of the time. My dogs don't often ask to go outside to potty. But that is because I have them on a schedule, and I tell them (within reason) when to go. It is called teaching the dog to go on command, with a cue word. Hope that helps.

Your Corgi is fairly typical. My three year old Pem, Taylor acts mostly the same. He usually does not volunteer to go out into the back of our rather large property and certainly won't toilet ianywhere inside our section. If I put him out on nice days in the winter, he mostly hangs by the ranchsliders on the decking and giving me looks that say, let me back in please. In the warmer months it is a little different - but he prefers inside to outside. I have always walked him for his toileting from a couple of weeks after he arrived as a 13 week old pup. It gets better as they get older. I would say that typically, a junior or adult Corgi won't need more than three toilet outings over a 24 hour period. This is unless they get huge quantities of water on hot days or vigorous indoor play.

Jackie is similar. I walk her to go potty. In the morning, I walk her, then I get ready for work, and then I let her out for a quick "pee break". But she just sits on the front stoop, unless I go out with her. I think she needs an audience.

You have had her for only 4 weeks so she is still new to your family. My dog Cody, is just 9 months now and I still take him out to go potty, on his leash,
in our back yard every 3 to 4 hours, depending on how much water he has drank and if we have been playing a lot. I still praise him when he goes potty also. He normally, does "not ask" to go out, except if he has to poop - then he sort of makes this "whining noise", but I have a pretty set schedule with him. I think what you are experiencing is normal, and she is still young and probably best if you just go outside with her to do her duty until she is older. linda |
