Today we say goodbye to the trim -
08-29-2006, 07:49 PM
Well, after bragging for months that Dudley never destroys anything in the house, I came home yesterday (after a TERRIBLE day at work) to find that he has shredded the trim on the door. So, today, before I left for work, I sprayed the entire area with the Bitter Apple Spray, but Dudley must have an affinity towards this because I came home once again today to find wood shavings on the floor. We leave him a variety of toys to play with, food, and water, but apparently none of these are as appealing as the trim. Any suggestions on ways to stop this problem? I obviously can't him continually destroying my trim (especially since we rent, but also because I'm sure it can not be healthy for him).

I would use either baby gates to secure and area for him, or use an X-Pen to keep him, and your woodwork in mint condition.

He is baby gated in the laundry room. He actually ate the trim next to the door where the gate was. I don't know if he was trying to find a way out, or what.

Maybelle is our chewer - she likes trim, sheetrock, table legs, etc. Thankfully, the bitter apple worked for her. I don't have any other solutions for you though. Once she is completely broke of her chewing, I am going to have to plaster and paint. Yuk!

Bonnie...that is NOT what I wanted to hear! I wish there was some sure-fire method of fixing all problems Corgi related...but alas, these dogs find something new to keep us on our toes with everyday!

I would suggest a crate.
Mine do great in their crates and dont mind it at all, and will even put themselves to bed when they get tierd.
Good Luck!

Jeni,
I like Barbara's idea with the X-pen - they sound easy to put up and take down - like a playpen and would save you lots of grief - I think this would work for you or a quite a bit larger crate.

We did try the crate before, but it seemed like a very long time to leave a pup in. He also has fewer bathroom accidents in the laundry room than the crate (which, I know, makes no sense, but it's the truth!) I'll look into getting an x-pen. Just out of curiosity, does anyone know a price range for one of these? I assume I can find one at Petsmart? Thanks for all the help guys!

WHEW! Your thread title gave me quite a SCARE ...oh, its "just" trim...
Chloe is crate-trained so whenever we leave the house for an extended period of time (more than an hour) we still put her in her "nest" for a "nap" - altho we have baby gates at either end of the kitchen we hesitate to trust her because as a puppy she chewed the chair legs, the cabinet corners, wall edges, and peeled up patches of flooring. (I, too, tried Bitter Apple - HUGE waste of $!!) The only suggestion I can make is to try Tabasco Sauce - it stains, however, but it seemed to be the only thing to deter Chloe's inappropriate chewing! She is 16 months old now, and is doing better - BUT last night she sauntered out of the kitchen carrying another hunk of linoleum ...

This is the one that we bought, I also bought the extentions later. But that is because Dylan is in his most of the time for his 4-6 months recovery. That and the fact that Monty likes to go in there with him.
It is also big enough to put an open kennel into the enclosure, allowing the dog access to it as well.
This is the plastic Play Yard. And the other picture is of one of the two metal X-Pens that we have as well. They make into a very large play area when joined together.

Jeni
sounds like the best solution for you is the crate or the x-pen for now.
Chloe is my chewer...she doesnt like the bitter apple so I always travel with it. She seems to be ok with wood now although I did catch her in time with a chair leg in her mouth a few days ago! First time in a long time... Paper is her biggest addiction now...toilet paper rolls, envelopes, anything...

I have found that Cody within the past two weeks has started to enjoy shredding tissue paper. I had a mess to clean up this morning.
