My corgi won't go potty in the rain -
09-14-2006, 08:25 AM
I have mentioned this before to you, folks. Milo doesn't go potty outside in the rain...period. He doesn't even like walking when it's raining. We tried to give him the pee pads in the house but he got so used to going out to potty that he ignores the pee pads. Fine. I understand that. But he won't go potty in the rain. So, he holds it inside the house and then can't hold it anymore and pees.
What can I do about this? Should I consult Caesar Millan or soemthing?
Please help.

I've kind of had the same problem with Oliver, but it's because he was traumatized by the hurricanes 2 years ago - he's much better now, but has occasional lapses. What I really don't get is he loves water - just not rain I guess. Anyway, I had a beach umbrella I put out in the yard and that seems to help - I also stand with him and tell him to go pee. Oh, I've also seen in some catalogues, a 'pee stand' which is some kind of stake-like thing you put in the ground where you want them to go pee.

Chip is the same way. If it is raining, he refuses to go outside to potty. If you take him out, he lowers his ears and looks like he has been beat and runs back to the back deck. He used to go potty on the back deck when it rained but now he figures he is too big I guess. He peed in the house a few weeks back when he couldn't hold it any more and then hid under the bed all day. I worry that he will get bladder infection. When it rained yesterday, my husband carried him outside and he did go pee (he had held it for about 12 hours) and ran back to the house. I wish there was a good solution. I am thinking of buying him a raincoat and hat to see if that might help.

My Milo was not traumatized in anway. He's just very wary of the rain. I worry about him getting an infection too because he holds it liek 10 - 12 hours! I can't even do that and I'm bigger than him so much. Is this all psychological? There really is no harm in using the potty outside when it rains.
When he pees inside the house no matter what, he feels very guilty and hides in a corner. He won't even come out when we ask him to unless we drag him out or gets food for him. He feels very bad and we don't even yell at him.
I think we just want our corgis to be happy!

Cody does go pee outside in the rain, but he doesn't seem thrilled to be out there when it rains. I do stand out there with him and encourage him to go and I walk him in different areas so he does. I don't think he likes the feel of the wet grass on his tummy either.
I think that even if Milo is giving you signals and being stubborn that he does not want to be out there and pee, you still have to somehow let him know, that he does need to do his duty and not to bring him in until he does.
Sweetly chee, would an umbrella help? Not sure, just a suggestion, or maybe the umbrella itself would scare him - don't know.

Yep, tried the umbrella too. It seems little help but at least we tried. I thought dogs like water! I thought cats don't like water. I have yet to take Milo to a pool and let him swim...not sure if he'll like to.

I think the rain dropping in his ears is what bothers Chip but he doesn't like an umbrella either.

I don't think dogs look at standing out in the rain and actually being in a pool as the same thing, but I could be wrong. Cody loves to go in his baby pool and will jump in and out to retrieve his ball. When it rains, he sort of just stands there with his ears back, but he still goes pee, but his enthusiasm for each is definitely different.
When you take Milo out when it is raining, exactly how long do you stand out there with him? Do you stay in one spot or do you lead him in different directions trying to get him to potty?
Once out there with you, is he trying to pull you back into the house rather than do his duty?

I agree Emilie,
I think just like anything else that Corgis can be stubborn about, we just have to keep them out there until they go; even if it means walking them around the yard and staying out there and getting ourselves wet, (although I do have a rain coat); otherwise they will continue to do this as they get older.

The scenario is this. Milo always pee just a few steps from the house because there's a fire hydrant there. But when it's raining, he won't even step out the door of the house. He sees the rain and he won't budge. We tug him to go and he will pull back. Finally we took him with the umbrella and he peed but he didn't want to walk around too much.
This is not fun for dogs I see! And we usually have to clean him up pretty hard since the dirt and rain got to his belly or coat.

Jackie is not a fan of the rain either (or water at all, for that matter). But I did the same as Emilie, kept her out until she went & then hightailed it straight back inside & dried her off. (although we don't have a yard, so we would a walk per our usual routine, except we would go back in as soon as she went) She soon caught on that, if she wants to be out of the rain, she needs to get straight to business!
