This is a discussion on Milo's 2nd Playdate - A BARK FEST within the Behavioral Issues forums, part of the Behavior & Training category; I agree about PetCo/PetSmart training - I WORK at PetSmart and I would not take an aggressive dog to that ...

I agree about PetCo/PetSmart training - I WORK at PetSmart and I would not take an aggressive dog to that kind of training. I have met some great PetSmart trainers, but most would not be able to help with serious aggression training.

SweetLychee: Miss Gambler was shipped to us when she was 9 weeks old, so we have watched her develop from puppy to adult and we have no understanding of her behavior other than the tid-bits that I offered. She wants nothing to do with other dogs, period! We use a collar with leash as well as a harness with leash(just twist the two together and it becomes one leash to hold). We retain strict control over her when out, and she behaves beautifully, unless another dog enters the picture, so we are always looking ahead, and I always carry pepper spray, water bottle and a whistle. She couldn't be any sweeter, truly, the dog thing is just a quirk, of which she has a few, like all Corgis, right?
Take care, and love your corgi! |

Found some expensive trainers!
Guys, I thought I would give you all an update. I found some expensive trainers! More expensive than Petco!!
Most charge around $350-500 (ouch ) for classes. They teach the basic sit/come/hand/stay command. Those I already taught Milo so no need to waste the $$. Then, the private lessons one cost around $150-200 (double ouch ) for one hour. They either come to our home or we meet them at their facility or some other place. These are some of the links I found: www.k9sbestfriend.com http://www.nycleverk9.com www.empireofthedog.com www.AndreaArden.com www.DogGoneSmartNYC.com Have anyone ever tried any one of them or had experience with a private trainer? This is what sucks living in NYC! Everything is jacked up! I still have some big medical bills to pay.

Mabel, If you have checked out some of these links/trainers and if one or two appears to interest you, I would call them and ask for some references. Since I do not live near you, I am not familiar with any of those. |

Sweetlychee:
This is just a suggestion but have you contacted the ASPCA in NYC? They may know of a good trainer that is a little less expensive or they may hold training classes at their facility.

Sweetlychee,
Put the tapes in the mail yesterday, the lady said they try to get them there in two days. As I said keep them as long as you want. I don't need them back, you may send them on to someone else if you like. |

Hey Guys,
Thanks for all the links and private message for trainers. We found one recommended by our vet: Link This guy is named George and he said a 10 week course for $600. The odd thing is that we only need to drop off Milo there - no need to stay. He will teach all the basic commands and help Milo with his fears of dogs. Do you guys think that's a good deal or sounds good? It's close by to our home and convenient but I find it odd that we don't need to be present for the training. We just need to drop him off. Please take a look at the site and give me your input.

Has your vet met this guy personally or has some of his clients gone to see this guy with their pets and hear good reviews about him?
Now, what was the reason he said that you guys could not be there - too bad they don't have a two way mirror where you guys could watch, but Milo would not know you were there. I can understand him maybe not wanting you in the same room if he is working on fear issues, but did you talk to this guy yet and discuss the techniques that he uses? |

What technique does he use to train. How long would he stay each day, does he have references, can you observe a class prior to taking Milo? I was thinking you said that Milo knows the basic commands, sit, stay, down, etc?

Hi Guys,
My fiance talked to this guy. This guy knows the vet so that's how we got the refernces. He works for the vet actually. We saw him take care of the animals in our clinic before. I'm not sure what method he uses. We did not have a chance to ask him yet. I would need more granular information. Once I know, I'll post here! Thanks all! |

I would be very suspect of any trainer that only wants to work with the dog. You can teach a dog, and have it behave a certain way with one person... but if you then turn around and give it to someone else (in this case, back to the owner) the dog will revert back to it's orriginal behaviors if the owner has not been taught as well. For me, I don't like the way it sounds... and I would never ever just drop Checkers off with someone and not be able to observe everything going on. Espeically for a dog that could be fearful already. The point of a dog behaviorist is not to teach the dog... it's to teach the human. I like Cesar's quote from his show in that regard. "I rehabilitate dogs, I train people" (or something like that). Yes, Milo needs some help... but unless you are participating in that process it won't make sense to you and he will eventually go back to his old ways after being home. I would keep looking if it were me... there has got to be someone better around....
