Good Deeds and First All-Nighter! - 10-26-2006, 06:24 AM

Tex is now a growing girl at 7 weeks old. . .We decided to take advantage of the socializing and do a good deed at the same time. My mother works at a nursing home here in town, so we decided to pay a little visit. . . what a darling hour!!!

Tex, despite her rough and rowdyness at home, sensed how she needed to behave. She was very gentle and loving to the residents of the nursing home, and was playful with the nurses. The best part of it was the smiles and the lit up eyes from the Residents when she'd come through the door.

We decided to do that a little more often since both Tex and the residents thrived on it.

This was Tex's second day in a row on big adventures. . .she ate at around 7ish, played and played and played with her. . .took her out to potty and put her in her crate for the night. . .(around 9:30. .) I woke up in a panic at 6 this morning. I had not heard her whimper or fuss (which she usually does when she wants to go potty.) I got up to make sure she was okay. . and she was fine! Opened up the crate and took her outside. . checked the crate. . .NO MESS!!! MY GOOD GIRL SLEPT ALL NIGHT WITHOUT A WHIMPER OR ACCIDENT!!!!!

We're having so much fun! More adventures tonight when we go visit some friends. :-)

Tex brought so much delight and joy. I was just wondering was it too early for Tex to socialize and get out of the house. I kept Milo in the house until he got all his shots and vaccinations just in case.

Anyhow, Tex did a great thing and bravo to you for the idea!

The little girl is growing up!
Maybe you should look into getting her certified as a therapy dog when she gets older.

The therapy dog idea sounds great. It sounds like little Tex is a natural.

Tex reminds me of Taylor because Taylor has never once whimpered (cried)- from the first day I got him until now. Taylor has been a regular at hospitals, rest homes and retirement villages ever since he was 8 months old. But there is no reason why he couldn't have started the visiting even three months sooner.

Ummm, afraid not. Therapy dogs as certified by Therapy Dogs International or Delta Society do not hold the same type of assistance dog as do seeing eye dogs for example.

Just to get more specific as to what I meant: The dog can be certified as a working dog if the therepy needed if for the owner, labeled a companion dog, and a companion dog can't be denied into a hotel, etc. You just need a doctor to confirm this need.

But that wasn't the kind of therapy "work" Tex was doing. I understand and do know what you are talking about and it is different.

That's a lot to put on a seven week old puppy. Sounds like she was a real trooper. Hope she continues to enjoy this kind of activity.

I agree with Debbie - I'd not want to throw too much at such a young puppy and though in another thread i said that I had Corgis trained for conformation shows at a young age, none actually went into the ring until they were four months and well prepared for the experience. It is better to underwhelm than overwhelm at least in their first 16 weeks of life.
