Newman my Bassett Hound / Cardigan Welsh Corgi mutt, learned how to open doors. How to turn the knob and open the door towards himself. I am both horrified and proud of the wiley little guy. Click on the Myspace Link and read his Blog!

If you're going to mix breed a Corgi - about the best mix is a Corgi with a Basset Hound - especially a Cardigan, because that is probably part of the origin of the Corgi breed.
Isn't it lovely when dogs can do things you would never think they could master and can't really be taught to them.

Only problem is that if both breeds have the same genetic problems in their breed, you may get them in the mix. Sometimes in a mutt or mix you can avoid breed-specific genetic problems. Not always, but often. Newman, benig a CWC/BH combo, like all long-backed short legged dogs has back problems. He's only about 5 or 6 but he's got fused vertebrae and artritis in his back. Poor little guy. But he's still playful and happy all the time, and he loves neck scratches!

Well, here's an update on Newman. Four months later, he's finally figured out that his new trick works not only for the bathroom door, but the bedroom door also. I'll bet he'll figure out that it works for any door very soon. We'll have to keep the place locked up.
