Happy Birthday Biscuit! - 03-02-2007, 10:49 PM

Sunday our Biscuit will be one year old!!!
We are thinking of getting him some presents. Does anyone know of a ball that he won't be able to destroy. He chews up everything!
Also, we are thinking of getting him a doghouse. He sleeps indoors now but wakes up my husband very early every day to go out. I was hoping that he might like to sleep outside in a doghouse and then maybe my husband could get a little more sleep. Any tips for getting him used to the doghouse?
Also, what is a good type of house for a hot climate. Here it can get very hot in the summer during the day, (so we might even have him inside a lot) but the nights are cool. In the winter the nights can be cold but generally don't go below freezing.

What is fit
for Birthday Boy Biscuit?
A pliable ball that will last a week, a month, a year.
Perhaps none exists in the nation,
But have a ball anyway - happy one year old celebration.

I am certain if you go into a pet shop and ask the manager to direct you to a suitable ball for a dog to play with that will withstand crunching teeth for many a day, he/she will have the answer.

Happy First Birthday, Biscuit!!!

About the only ball that Trevor hasn't taken apart is one of those super-hard Kong balls. Of course, it's really hard and kind of heavy, so we don't actually play catch with it (I'm afraid I'll clunk him on the head with it ); it's more for him to play with during the day, when he's by himself.

I do have a plastic doghouse for him (got it at Petco, I think) in his outside kennel, but I don't rely on that for shade. The kennel itself has a weather-proof roof, but I also have a mister system rigged up for him, on a timer, for when the weather turns warm (did I mentioned he is spoiled?!! ) And when it gets really hot (mid 90's and above), or it's raining heavily, he stays inside for the day, in his indoor pen. (I can only imagine what fun the cats have, tormenting him while he's inside the pen, and they're outside )

My other suggestion is a bag of tennis balls - now you can buy cheap packs of tennis balls made in China and give Biscuit one to him at a time. So what if he chews these up.They still work out cheaper than chew bars.

I would resist confining Biscuit to a kennel. He'd be much happier inside and close to you. In fact if my Taylor was relegated to sleep in one of the lounges or in the conservatory or in the garage instead of a bedroom with a human lying on the bed, he would probably yell at noises like the morning newspaper thrown down our driveway at five in the morning, other dogs barking, birds singing etc. But being in a bedroom and having been told to be quiet as a little puppy, he has learnt only to talk when it is something really drastic. One of the secrets is not to upset him like I think your husband probably does - he kind of stresses Biscuit and confuses him and Biscuit's yelling out could be the results of this. My wife upset Taylor long ago and the result is quite amusing. Taylor no longer sleeps directly alongside me wife, but nearer the other end of the bed. Sometime during the night he will shift to the foot of the bed then later finish up alongside me on his own bed.

Happy Birthday Biscuit

Does Biscuit sleep in a crate indoors now?

We have a two story home and Cody used to sleep in his crate on the main level, and he would wake me(by whining) at nearly 5 a.m. every day.

I finally moved the crate upstairs near us and it made 100% difference; the whining stopped and now he waits until we get him. His crate is in the spare bedroom adjacent to our bedroom and I think he feels more comforted being closer to us and being able to hear us.

Hope he has a great birthday

Happy birthday Biscuit! So cute! Hope your day will be filled with special treats!

Have you tried the Kong line of toys? Milo isn't the most destructive toy chewer, but he is pretty good at it and the Kongs hold up (at least long enough for me to justify the price I paid for them)!! Try the flying saucer disc made by Kong. It unscrews in the middle and you can smear peanutbutter or insert treats inside and boy, does it keep Milo occupied for at least a good hour!

Thanks for the advice.
Biscuit had a great birthday. Our 6 year old daughter wrapped the toys we got him and put a piece of salami in with them. Biscuit loved tearing into the wrapping to find his treats.
Biscuit used to sleep in his crate in our spare bedroom. Now he just sleeps on the futon in the spare bedroom. He starts whining every morning at about 5:30 am. That is the time my husband gets up on weekdays, but he'd like to sleep later on the weekends.

Happy birthday Biscuit. Jesse chews (another word for destroys) everything, kitchen cabinets, carpets, stucco on the house, he's very good at pulling the stuffing (and squeeker) out of toys, and has even bitten chunks out of Kongs and those hard rubber bones. I found what looked like a marble sized ball bearing covered in hard rubber and can't figure what it came from, possibly from inside some toy? I don't think anyone makes a toy Jesse can't destroy. He's getting better, but I don't trust him a bit. My dad's old pit bull used to eat rocks in the yard. I don't think there is something out there that isn't indestructable. Let Biscuit have fun and watch out for the pieces. You can only go so far in trying to protect them.

Our corgi loved attacking a basketball outside. They are pretty tough.
