Emilie,
you are so right, it is expensive and one may never know what can crop up in regards to their health and the expenses involved. Behinderhereyes. Maybe it would be good to put getting a Corgi puppy on the back burner and take Lucy with you to your new apartment you plan to live in. You are going to be very busy with work and school. See how it goes with her and if you can afford all the expenses you discussed and if you can manage. Try that first, because if it doesn't work out, Lucy can always go back to live with your mom. Then you can get a Corgi pup after you graduate and are more settled in life with a better job and with the worries of school behind you. |

I hate to be a Debbie downer, but I think you need to take a step back and take another look at all of your plans.

I am 17 years old and I have 2, 14 month old pembrokes. There is *no* possible way I would be able to leave for college and take them with me. Well...I could, but I would never be able to provide for them on an emotionally sound level (or probably physical either), even if I could on a fiscal level. You talk about how you have everything worked out money wise, but dogs need so much more than just provisions, they need physical and mental outlets, *especially* corgis. There are some days when I wish that I could go away to college and experience living in a dorm or a sorority, and there are some day when I have feelings of regret for having taken on the responsibility of my dogs and it *sucks*, but it is a reality that I am having to face. I'm already taking college classes and I'm a junior, just so that I can get out early and take less classes a semester to spend more time with Izzy and Frodo. Another thought, I honestly cannot see a breeder allowing you to have one of their puppies while knowing of your plan. Have you told all the breeders which you are looking at about your whole plan? I had a horrible time trying to get a breeder to even take me seriously even after they knew that I would be living at home for college, and even when they knew all of my plans for a puppy (tracking, agility, etc.), and still even after giving all of my references. In fact, none of them would give me a puppy, I ended up getting my guys from a BYB, they looked good on paper but I was duped. Sorry this was so long, and I don't want you to think that I am trying to ruin your perfect dream, but coming from someone who is in a similar situation I hope that you can gain something from this.

Also, Lucy's been an only dog for so long. And now as a senior you'll be asking her to accept a puppy. You need to consider her feelings and her well being too. At this stage in her life a puppy might not be the best thing for her. And it might not be safe to leave them alone together if you do get a puppy. Peggy

I agree! You have a very good head on your shoulders IzFro. Those pups are lucky to have you as a "mom"!!!

I am confused - I thought you were still in high school? It sounds like you get paid every two weeks (pay period) $150 isn't much to live on weekly and have two dogs, pay expenses plus vet bills, college expenses, etc.

It is certainly not that, but I hate that alot of people think that I don't know that I am doing. There are no colleges close to where I live, that offer the program I want to take. So this is why I have to go to Rochester. Plus, if need be my mother said she would take care of my dog till I graduate, but I really want my dog to come. I get scared when I am alot. I also get lonely and cry, because I suffer from depression. So I need some company and I don't want to have a roomate. Or someone I don't know. My mom said if I ever need money I can barrow from her, so everything really is taken care of. I don't mean to get offensive, it happens with my depression. I am sorry, but I really don't need anyone else telling me how hard it is going to be. I know and I am willing to atleast give it a try. Besides if I didn't try I would alreaay be a failure. I apologize.
