We have lived with a German speaking family for round 20 years now. They used to speak German pretty much exclusively, at least the Ma and Pa did, but as the kids got older, they rebelled and would only speak English. So you'd hear these bi-lingual conversations going on all the time. I did get pretty good at knowing what was being said, although they didn't realise that sometimes, as I didn't reply in German. Except to ask for the butter to be passed!
