What happends at my house when it gets hot.

This is Libbys best bud Abby. Abby has desided that the big pool is better then her 10'X30" Pool which she can swim in too. Libby has not really taken to swimming but Abby is working on her.

Abby's so good at climbing ladders, she should become a painter and paper hanger.

Thats a good idea. She really needs to start paying her own bills.

Taylor (almost) works for his living what with school classroom visits and now public libraries.
Regularly high placed dogs in dog sports and recreational events in New Zealand can certainly earn plenty of food as prizes so that their food bill becomes negligible.

That is how it is with my horses. They earn their keep quite well. Dogs are a bit differnt. Most of mine are just pets and getting up in age. The younger 2 are show dogs so I at least hope they do well at that.

Lets hope that you win and then win food that you know is good for your Corgis. Earlier this year I gave bags of food away because they were not suitable for Taylor.

With 5 other dogs I am sure some one could eat it. Although I am picky on what I feed them. Amy my salukie can only eat certain feeds as most give her the itchies.

I will have to look and see if they give those type of prizes. I prefure the $$ type myself but I have yet to see payouts in dog shows like they do in some horse shows. Most of the horse shows that my trainer shows my horses in are $1K+ added classes. Ah just think if they did that with dog shows more people would probable show.

In NZ at a championship conformation shows they usually have breed prizes of dog food and sashes and in group and in-show awards there are valuable gifts, more sashes as well as bags of food. A lot of the show sponsors are food companies. At agility meetings it is mostly bags of food and sashes or medallions - the first placed gets the biggest bag.

Most dog shows in the US don't give money as prizes. Sometimes there might be a trophy of some sort for first and sometimes other placements. Not often it's dog food though.

<LOL> Depending, you might get trophies of some description and generally those go to the dogs that get the points, WD, WB, BOB, BOW & BOS.

Dream on. Dog people settle for maybe a quarter's worth of bookmark size ribbon. Cash pay outs, only a couple of shows offer "big" money prizes and those go to the BIG winners, not classes. Supported entries and specialties that offer sweepstakes, placers in those classes might get enough to buy a meal. Dog food companies do sponsor shows, however, they help with the club expenses of armbands and other materials, not cash prizes.

We have shows in NZ that carry cash prizes - these are usually called Open Shows - and our national show and several others have quite big cash handouts - for breed winners as well.

The winner of Westminister gets a nice check and I believe dog food for life. The Eukanuba BOB gets a nice check as does the Best Bred by Exhibitor in Show. National and regional specialty shows, along with all-breed shows that have supported entries, sweepstakes class placings get cash. Some all breed shows might have like a $25 cash prize for group winners and Best in Show, maybe $50 - but those are rare. More often than not a trophy is given and those aren't necessarily cup style trophies. For the August shows coming up, the local all breed club is giving pottery from a local famous pottery area - serving plates, vases, bowls, chip & dip sets.

But if one is thinking they're going to make $ off prizes showing in the US, then they need to find a different sport.

That is why I refuse to give up my horses. Dogs are ok to show but when it comes down to it the horses bring home the $$. Although there is $$ to be made in other areas then showing with horses too.

The dog shows around here do have cash prizes for some classes and some BOS and supported entires. Most of the "B" matches also offer $$ prizes and some of the local obediance clubs offer other prizes. Gets poeple to join and participate in the club however they are not sactoined by AKC they are just fun open shows that have one of the local feed stores behind them for some prizes. Gets poeple out with their dogs.

Oh, those kind of shows. We have some of those too. Pet supply stores donate food and there are some cash prizes for things like owner/pet look alike contests, costume contests, etc. Training facilities might offer a free training session, things that are targeted to the general public.

YA usually they are not AKC sanctioned. Every once in a great while they will be but mostly for fun and try to get people into the sport of obediance or what ever you are doing with that club. We even do it with horse shows. THey call them fun shows and they try and get the trail riders involved so they can see if it maybe something they may enjoy doing and sometimes they will start coming to the biger open shows and give that a try.
