Sooty, the footy fan,
At 10 years and still out of hand.
But to Sooty we all send our hails,
As the Royal Corgi from the land of Wales.

THanks for all the wishes for Sooty and the poem Michael- but for footy( I do think you use that for rugby?) make it rugby-footy here is soccer.

In his younger days Sooty had an encounter with a football kicked by a neighbour;s son and twisted his knee trying to avoid it.He does like watching rugby though, not the famous Llanelli team as dogs aren't allowed but our village team who play across the street from our house.

In New Zealand football or footy is usually in reference to rugby. We have some rugby clubs here still called football clubs without the word 'rugby.' That other game is usually called soccer here - just like it always is in the USA. Football in the USA is the rugby derivative sport of American gridiron.

I had Corgis who just loved a full size rugby ball to play with and they managed to master it as much as one can such a a funny shape thing. I have taken all my Corgis to rugby matches - plenty of premier division one senior club matches and the occasional representative provincial (state) match. When I use to cover the sport for the media, I was well known to be the reporter with the Corgi.

Taylor enjoys watching us watching All Black etc rugby on television. And he really loves going to rugby matches when one of my sons is playing. He usually gets made a fuss of by team members etc. But play with a rugby ball - not for him.

Cannot say my two like it when I am watching rugby on tv especially if I get annoyed with the referee- but they do like it when I get excited when we- Wales or Llanelli score a try.Of course with Wales that is not so often LOL

Not so many tries for the All Blacks just lately either. We had a Welsh ref for the ABs versus Australia a week ago and we converted a near record seven penalties but only got one try. The Welsh ref wasn't too bad - I have seen a lot worse this year - but he made three glaring mistakes which went against the Aussies.

That ref lives about 10 miles away and last season was 'assisting' the Scarlets with their play and keeping within the laws- but when he reffed us against the Ospreys he was appalling and virtually gave them the game.

He is on Welsh language tv as a stand-up comic.( now does that tell you everything?) And appears on Jonathan Davies's( remember him? - great solo try against the AB in the 80s) tv show which is always on the night before a Wales game.

A stand-up comic. That is interesting. Refs do need a sense of humour though - the really serious types do not last and are not good for the game. Yes Davies - one of a batch of terrific players. Rugby is in a state of ruins at present with the games going backwards at a great rate of knots - but hope is on the way with a swag of rule changes coming in next year. I predict that the refs and the 10001 rules of the game will wreck rugby as a spectacle at the World Cup in France in a couple of months.
