Hi; I have no idea how to use this site or what a thread is but it's time to try. You'll just have to believe that my Pem, Bustle is a lovely 3 year old because I don't know how to post a pic. either. Question; what is the optimum time for a cardi puppy to leave its mom and littermates? I refused to take one at 8 wks. thinking that was too young. Am I mistaken? Thanks for reading. I am green

and Bustle. Vannette here, We have a few cardi breeders that will be right with you. You are right, 8 weeks is too soon. You started a thread so thats one question answered.

welcome...and you seem off to a good start...i know some people that have gotten pups that young but most of the breeders we have spoken to both times we were looking had said 10 weeks was the earliest and 12 was optimal....hope this helps...we are Colby, 14months and Cammie, 4 months- 2 fluffy pembrokes and their human mum and dad, Julie and Jamie....

The CWCCA Code of Ethics says puppies should not be placed prior to seven weeks. When this was put into effect it was probably during the time frame when many believed the optimum time for human/puppy bonding was at seven weeks. So someone placing at 8 weeks is acting in accordance with the CWCCA CoE. Having said that, usually the time frame for most Breeders to place puppies is between 10 and 12 weeks. Those extra few weeks make a big difference in bite inhibition, adjustment skills and all kinds of ways.

As an aside, the PWCCA just changed its Code of Ethics to say puppies should not be placed earlier than 10 weeks.

My cardi was available at 10 weeks. My wife and I drove up to the breeder and picked him up on the 11th week. I was amazed how small he still was. He weighted 7 pounds. His ears were up but he was still pretty helpless. I couldn't imagine picking him up any earlier.

We got Westin at 8 weeks, 5 pounds 3 ounces, but he seemed to be VERY well socialized (came right up to me after I picked him up from the airport and was romping around in the grass outside the pick-up area) and in great health. I haven't seen any adverse effects, he continues to be extremely affectionate and sociable to both ALL people and dogs.
