Taylor on TV
Next Wednesday morning on national television, Taylor and I are going out live from a studio only several minutes away from where I live, and I'll be talking about the 2006 NZ Canine Heroes Awards. I'm also to talk about Taylor and why he got runner-up in last year's awards in the Pet of the Year category. I've arranged another local person and her Cocker Spaniel named Gilby who finished runner-up in the Life Saving category in 2004, to also take part in the studio interviews. Then Taylor has to perform agility in some kind of arranged circuit in the studio. I take it that the set will be a large one. Anyway the show's producer didn't know what agility was all about so I told her it was hurdles, hoops, tunnels and planks. So God knows what they will come up with - and do they realise that Corgis have the shortest of legs and poles on hurdles can only be so high from the ground???? I also expect they will get me to talk a little about my book, Amazing NZ Dog Stories. So it will be great publicity for the Heroes Awards, for Corgis and for my book.

That sounds exciting for the two of you, hopefully, they won't have the hurdles set 3 feet high. I am assuming they will contact you at least the day before to see what you want set up; I guess I would be contacting them rather than be surprised at what they had set up once I got there.
Michael, would still like to see that picture of him with his large ribbon. linda Last edited by corgimom; 07-28-2006 at 06:01 AM. |

Linda- I'm sure the producer will give me a detailed description on Monday of the whole process. It would be funny if I see a tiny squashed up circuit of several obstacles and while the cameras are rolling, I am busy readjusting everything and chucking out obstacles to make room and then find that the hurdles are not adjustable and telling the world that Taylor won't be able to do any jumping. And don't let's talk about the flooring. It will probably be slippery and hard concrete.
Everything though is going to surprise me. My mind will just go blank. Hero Awards .......... what hero awards? My wife did take a couple of shots of Taylor (with his ears at half-mast) with his newly gained ribbon draped over him and his two trophies alongside. So when they get developed, I'll certainly give interested people a look see. |

How exciting for you and Taylor, Michael. I'm sure that Taylor will shine in his exhibition of his skills and that it all will go well. Unlike you, Taylor will just do his thing beause he loves it. You, on the other paw, will have had lots of opportunity to panic and come up with worse case scenarios! Think like Taylor, relax and and enjoy it!

Thanks a lot everyone. Probably the best advice is to think like Taylor who loves his agility and in meeting and greetng people, and then I won't be so nervous. Hey, I haven't even informed the organisation who owns the Heroes Awards - the NZ Kennel Club - yet.
To me the agility segment is an aside, so part of me says not to make a big deal out of it, while the other part says I should help make Taylor and therefore Corgis, look as cool and accomplished as possible. One thing I am going to do, rain or shine - give him a long overdue bath on Monday. |

Yes it's tomorrow. I'm sure it will go off pretty well. It is unpredictable if I remember all the right things to say in regard to the canine awards and if Taylor actually wants to perform in front of lights, cameras and and a strange environment. I'll be taking some treats to coax him with. I tried to get him to go through a hoop in the lounge of a rest home over a year ago - and he wouldn't budge. Still, he'll look nice and importantly, give Corgis some great publicity. There are a lot of ex Corgi owners in NZ or family members of ex owners and the breed can certainly do with a burst of promotion.

The tv thing went pretty well.
Studio people made a great fuss of Taylor and Taylor said hello to everyone by reaching up from his back legs. Two of them commented that Corgis are usually snapppy(as in biting and unfriendly) and I was able to say that Taylor is a typical Corgi and any others that had showed less in temperament, were not the norm. Taylor sat passively but with his ears up during the interviews. Then it came time for his agility performance. The studio had rigged up studio props and it was quite funny. In order of obstacles, they had a tin 'plank' for the dog walk, a table - he had to jump onto and off, a two step mobile platform that he stepped up and jumped off the other side, six traffic cones (wrapped in blue towels and taped over ( to hide the orange colour underneath) to act as weaving poles, and then two speakers propping up a thick piece of hose that constituted a (rather high) jump. Before we went to air, we practiced the 'course' about three times - and I was pleasently surprised that Taylor took all these contraptions in his stride and we were going quite quick at the third attempt. So in the live performance, Taylor went very well, very fast though he decided it was quicker to run past the two last traffic cones before hurdling over the jump. The other person with their dog that I arranged to be part of the interview was a lady who owns a beautiful near 13 year old Cocker Spaniel named Gilby who some years ago had saved the life of his kennel mate who had been seriously poisoned. Gilby is now almost deaf but he looks so young in every other aspect and his eyesight is very good. I didn't get to say everything I wanted to, but time ran out. Thanks everyone for the good vibes. |
