Lightbulb Switching from puppy chow to adult food? - 11-10-2006, 07:12 AM

Milo is about to turn 1 in 2 months. So far, his Purina puppy chow is almost all gone. When he turns 1, is that the age to give him adult kibbles? His diet right now is just the Purina puppy chow. Should we stick with the Purina brand? I have heard that Iams are very good also.

I know Purina puppy chow is a bit more oily than some other brands but his breeder has always fed that to him so we stuck with it.

Thanks, all.

*IF* he were mine , he'd been on adult food six months ago. I've addressed the whys and reasoning in other food threads, so I won't repeat them here. Berry, who turned 9 weeks today, will be on straight puppy food until this bag she is sharing with Munchee runs out. Although Munchee is 15 months old, he needed a little extra weight. He's so active and busy, he's burning off calories pretty fast, so I have begun adding some puppy food to his regular adult kibble. He needs the few extra pounds for conformation and its worked. Berry and Munchee will be sharing a mix of adult and puppy for a time.

Whatever works for your dog is the right food to feed. IAMS is a good food, but between the two, I prefer the Purina Selects brand.

I switched Koda to regular adult food about a month ago when he was 6 months old. Largely because of the advice I got from people like glencorgi in a thread that I started a while ago.

I feed Koda a little more than a cup a day of Dick VanPattens Natural Balance Venison & Brown Rice. Largely because it is a allergy formula.

When I got Jemma at 7 months the breeder had already switched her to grown dog food - I agree with Debbie. I use a food only available in Canada, but it's a natural blend containing lots of foods that are antioxidants like blueberries and sweet potatoes.

I switched Chip to Purina Pro Plan for adults about 2 months ago. Him and Maybelle were getting roly poly on the Pro Plan for puppies. Chip can now eat the adult brand just fine. I am so happy for that. He is 10 months old tomorrow. He also gets 3 pieces of the special Science Diet (I think SD) for his teeth each day. Debbie - I wish he would have liked the selects as I like the ingregient mix but he didn't.

Does anyone also add some vitamins or other food to supplement their diet? I will on occasion give Milo a piece of fruit such as an apple. If he's very well behaved, we give him so cooked chicken. We are exploring in vitamins also.

So far I have people say: IAMs, Purina Pro Plan, Science Diet, and some others. Anymore?

Milo is not having any troubles at all. His diet is consistent and he is well nourished. That's why we didn't switch him yet. Also, many have advised me to wait 1 year. I'm learning as going along. I hear different things everytime. The label also says differently.

Science Diet is the most expensive one I encounter so far.

Does anyone feed their corgis the canned dog food? The wet kind? Is that good also? I know kibbles keep their teeth cleaner.

I switched Cody to regular adult food at round 7 months. He is on the Natural balance allergy also because he previously had diarrhea and was biting at his feet. I rotate between the Venison & Rice, Fish and Sweet Potato and the Duck and Potato - this food has made a huge difference for him. And this also has no by products or fillers.

I have not found Science Hill to be the most expensive where I live and you can get it in just about any grocery store over here now.

I try to feed Zip (7 years old) Beneful Healthy Weight and Zia (12 weeks) Beneful for puppies. They both end up eating each other's food. Zia really seems to prefer the adult food.

That is very adorable. I can imagine them doing that. They are such good pals!

I heard about Benefuls also and from the commercials, they look pretty tasty.

Our breeder started Buddy on Royal Canin Medium Puppy and suggested he stay on it till 9 months and then swith to Royal Canin Medium Adult. We've made the switch over this past month with no issues. Weight mangaement or allergies have not been a problems, so far. It's been a good food for him. He receives approximately 1 1/4 cups/day total (1/2 c am and pm and 1/4 cup in a treat ball for midday). We also supplement with vegetables and fruit at the midday snack and evening meals. He's considered large framed by the breeder and his weight is between 21 and 22 lbs at 10 1/2 months of age.
