Research Paper - 11-20-2006, 06:15 PM

Hi I recently wrote this research paper for my writing class. I was wondering what you guys thought about it. I really worked hard on this.

Name: Tiffany

What is really in Dog Food?

When you think of dog or puppy food, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Most likely it is wholesome chunks of chicken, lamb, or turkey. Maybe it is peas, carrots, and potatoes. One thing is for sure a person who truly wants the best for their dog. What if I could prove that by feeding commercial brand dog food it is poisoning your beloved companion. Believe me this is the least someone wants for their animal.
That is why, I believe that after reading this article that it will make a person more cautious about what to look for when picking a brand of dog food. What are some of the things to look forward to when reading this research paper. What is really in commercial brand dog foods such as IAMS? The process of making the dog food. Last but certainly not the least what are the astronomically good and the absolute worst dog foods to be feeding your companion?
Ingredients are the most important thing to look at when purchasing dog food. They may be able to keep a dog alive well into their mid-teens. Manufacturers wills put in very much information about the sources of the ingredients. Did you know that dogs are supposed to live into their twenties? Most of the time dog only live till their mid-teens. So what is really the deal with dog foods? When you look at the ingredient label on the back or side of the dog food the first thing that should be shown is a source of protein. If the meat has the word meal or by-product with it then it is no good. Meals often contain a large amount of bone. This can make it very uneasy to digest for you dog. By-products are often foods that are unfit for a person so guess where they go. That’s right that most likely go right into you beloved dog food. Whole grains…. What is so bad about bout the whole grains in dog food? Most often you will see something like corn, rice, or potatoes or even all of them together. These have a poor source of nutrients for humans and so do they for a dog. Most likely you will see corn meal or some type of meal in your dogs food. Once again these whole are a poor quality. They can most likely will have mold or contaminants.
Recently Tina Perry found, “scientists in commercial brand industry have discovered that it is possible to make a mixture of inedible scraps, the fortify them with artificial vitamins, minerals, preserve it so it can on a shelf for more than a year and make it attractive and makes it into whimsical shapes so it appeals to humans.” Now that the ugly secret of what is in dog food unveiled I will tell you the process in which the companies make their dog foods.
Exactly how is the dog kibble cooked? While it is a simple a process know as rendering. In this process the meals are rendered (cooked) at a extremely high temperatures for hours. Then it is passed through a steam as a high pressure. It moves through the extruder to make the meal cook quicker. This will alter and damage and nutrients actually in it. So they then add extra vitamin, minerals, and nutrients to make up for what little nutrients it has. Since the American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) profiles set only minimums for many nutrients, tests shown that excessive amounts of minerals. This really scares me that our dogs are not being fed the very best they can be fed. With all that out of the way let us take a look into, what to look for in dog food.
What should everyone owning a dog look for when purchasing food for their companion? Did you know four out of every major dog food companies in the United States are sub-standards of multinational food production companies?
Some of the most reputable manufacturers of “natural” and “super premium” foods agree with reputable veterinarians and other experts that the best diet for your dog is one you make yourself. With perfectly balanced nutrition of organic foods. I know most people reading this are thinking I don’t have the time or the money to make my own dog food. Most often it is a rare for people there own dog food. Plus it is way to time consuming, so I found a list of ten things to look for when purchasing a dog its food. This list was composed by: http://www.api4animals.org/facts.php?p=359&more=1
Ten Things to Look for When Purchasing a Dog its Food.
When selecting a commercial food make sure that the labeling says “AAFCO.”
Never buy a food containing “by-product meal” or “meat and bone meal.”
Avoid all products relying on by-products as a source of animal protein. Those are organs and stuff unfit for human consumption.
Look for named meat or meal as the first ingredient on the back or side of the bad.
Avoid generic or store brands. These may be repackaged rejects of the big manufacturers and contain cheaper ingredients.
Unless specifically recommended by you veterinarian , avoid “light,” “senior,” or “specific formula.” It contains agents may that result in skin, coat, and other problems with your dog.
Select brands promoting “natural.” Several brands are now preserved with vitamins such as C and E in stead of BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin and propyl gallate.
Check the expiration date on the bad to ensure freshness of the dog food.
When you open a bag of dry dog food, give it a big sniff. If there is and rancid or bad odor at all, return it immediately for and exchange or refund.
Store dry dog food in a sealed non-porous container ideally a large popcorn tin and store it in a cool and dry place. Canned dog food is best removed from the can and refrigerated in a glass or ceramic container.
I can ensure you that this will help you greatly in finding you perfect dog food. I did go to a pet store called PetSmart and looked at a few major brands of dog food (IAMS, Science Diet, Nutro, Eukanuba, Pro Plan Select, and Royal Canin) out of all of these brands the only real good brand was Pro Plan Select. Which upon finding out I immediately switched dog foods.
I hope maybe this research paper got through to some people and they will think a lot harder before buying a dog food product, or at least take a look at what is really in it. So now I hope when you are looking at dog food you will take a second glance to see what you are actually feeding you beloved dog Fido or Pooki. This concludes the research paper I have done on dog food, I hope this makes a difference.

That was very thorough Tiffany, it's a good eye opener for people who may not know what they are buying - like you said thinking they are doing the best for their dog(s).
