My Puppy Ate Some Onions! - 10-21-2005, 05:48 PM

My little cousin fed my puppy a slice of supreme pizza with bits of onions and now she's having uncontrollable diarhea. Is she going to be ok? Should I take her to the hospital? She's been like this for three days now.

Yes. Call the vet. Your dog needs medicine and possibly fluids. He could dehydrate.

Hi Muhri
If your Corgi puppy is not acting lethargic and is alright otherwise, here's how you could treat her diarhea: put her on a bland diet for a couple of days or so and see how that goes. An example of a "bland diet" is feeding her only with boiled rice and boiled chicken and making sure she has plenty of water to drink. NO other liquids or cereals.
Onions are on the dangerous list to feed to dogs. I could provide you with a comprehensive list of anti-dog food items. But a few bits of onion on a slice of pizza surely wouldn't affect your pup to the extent it did. It could be that the bits of onion were part of a food problem that has caused your pup sloppy motions, or a contributory factor towards some other ailment.
I'm very careful what I feed Corgis under the age of 18 months. Nothing that can be considered spicey or harsh or too far out of the ordinary. I even make sure their dry food portion of their meals ie kibble-type food, is softened with a bit of hot water.

Thanks for the help guys. She is all well now. She actually stopped her diarhea the next day.

I went with the bland diet and gave her lots of water. She's a tough girl.

Thanks again all.

Michael could you tell me where to get the anti food items for dogs? I would really like to know as you hear so much. I could not believe my Poodle lived so long with a stupid owner like me. He lived to be 15 years old and had to be put down with congestive heart failure and collapsing trachea and he ate everything, onions, garlic, loved potato peelings and now I have read that all those are on the toxic list for dogs. I cannot believe I was so unknowledgable. I even asked my vet about the potato peelings and he said if he liked them give them to him.

Thanks bajoiner

Bajoiner - here is a list I have compiled for the basis of a possible article. I think it captures most of the major prohibitive foods, but any list like this is clearly entendable

Onions
Castor beans
Mushrooms
Rhubarb
Tomato plants
Aloe
Raisins
Chocolate
Macadamia nuts
Sugar
Avocado
Azalea
Foxyglove
Holly
Lily of the Valley
Oleander
Tulip
Ivy
Wandering Jew
Daffodil
Nightshade
Gladiolas
Narcissus
Cyclamen
Hydranga
Poinsetta
Some oils and fats
Too much garlic
Too much white rice, and potato.
Grapes
Raw chicken, wild birds and game.
Raw pork
Raw offal
Raw eggs
