Innova - 01-19-2007, 01:50 PM

I have read good things about Nutra's Innova in the green bag and some well known trainers have highly recommended it as the only commercial dog food they would recommend. Has anyone used this before and did your pet respond favorably to it? There's a place about three miles below the house that sells it and would be quite convenient if it rates well with most owners.

I think i posted about this before, but Innova was the first food i had Dillon on and it was too rich for him and he ended up with loose stools even after a very long and slow introduction to it and switch from his previous food. We switched him off that and onto the Wellness Lamb which seemed to still be a little rich for him but yet still better than the Innova for his system. Since then , i have decided to a mix of dry foods so that there will be no nutritional deficiencies - Currently Dillon is on Timberwolf ocean blue, Timberwolf Elk and Wellness lamb, and when we run low, we will switch one of the foods out of the rotation and bring in another food ( probably natures balance or eagle pack)
There is a great informative thread about foods that was started on here a bit ago:

What I find odd about those three is that neither is offered, in all the assortments they have, at PetSmart...wonder why? Neither is Innova, either offered there. Luckily all three you mentioned can be purchased at two different locations within about 3-5 miles of where I live. I checked out their websites and all have such a variety it would be hard to choose from.

Yes, this is what my dogs eat and they're doing real well on it. They've been on it for 5 years now. It's a natural type food, with good ingredients. No corn. I highly recommend it.

I don't know about the American PetSmart's, but the ones I've been to up here don't sell the better quality brands.

I have found that any lamb food is too rich for my kids. Both mine eat a natural kibble as well, Rupe's is salmon based to help him stay trim, and Jem's is chicken based.

CoColt - either you are going to start eating Innova or you are thinking more seriously about getting a new dog. (Check your GoCorgi email)

Hmmmm...I don't know if Innova is for me or not. I'm really more of a Timber Wolf type. I never looked up to check those email messages. Guess I need to be more watchful. I'll check it out now.

I tried Chip on Innova and it didn't agree with him either. Chip likes pro plan but he will now eat the select if I feed it to him. He thinks it is a treat.

I have only found one or two brands of food sold at petco that i would feed my dog- but that is me, i dont feed Dillon anything with corn, soy, wheat, sugar, meat by products, fillers, artificial color or flavors. The only food that fits that criteria that is sold at our petco is natural balance (fish and sweet potato is the one i tried with Dillon and he liked it and did well on it -mixed with Wellness lamb.) I think the trick is to find what works for the individual dog.

The makers of Innova Natura say that their product has been tested by AAFCO - the key to whether this product is a complete and balanced diet for dogs is whether AAFCO have APPROVED the tested product.
Testing is one thing, approval is another.

Michael, Sometimes you write in a way that is quite confusing. Are you insinuating that Innova is not a quality food? See, the AFFCO has tested and approved much lesser quality foods, so their guidelines are obviously lienient as far as the level of quality they are willing to give a "passing" score. If you are good at ingredient list reading you will note that Innova has extrememly high quality ingredients so I am not sure what politics are involved with AFFCO to get labeled "approved" but if they have given a passing score to other much lesser quality foods with fillers, meat byproducts, and corn as their first ingredient so I have no doubt that Innova should be approved as well.

Michael,

Here is that link again for the Innova food that ColColt is talking about, go to the product profile and scroll down and you can read the statement again regarding AAFCO. Why do they need to put the word approve on the bag?

LOL

I agree, its not hard to get a dog food passed by AFFCO.......

I havent tried Innova personally, but the ingredient list looks great.

I just found a store about an hour away that sells some great premium brands, I plan to try it in the future though.

Innova is one of the best quality foods out there. Every dog is different though, and some will not do well on it while others do. I know that their EVO is extremely high in protein. I don't really put a lot of faith in AAFCO anyway, as I've seen them approve some godawful foods. I believe one of the only requirements for their approval is that 8 out of 10 dogs don't DIE on a food during the test lol...

That said, I feed mine Canidae All Life Stages. >^^;<
