bowl for crate - 01-29-2007, 06:49 PM

Okay, so I couldn't decide where to post this question, so diet and nutrition seemed as good as any. Anywho, I was just wondering, for those of you who keep your pups in crates while you're away, what kind of water bowl do you use in the crate? I had been using a stainless steel bowl since we started crating Dudley, but he almost always dumps in and ends up sitting on a wet blanket for the remainder of the day, which has to irritate his skin. Just wondering what works for everyone else and if anyone has some good suggestions for alternatives.

Thanks
Jeni

I used stainless bowls in Milo's crate when he was a pup. I put it in the front corner of the crate. He never tipped it though. Sometimes there would be a little bit of water spilled but not much. I used a small bowl and filled it half way.
I've seen water bottles made for a dog crate that work in the same way as bottles used for hamsters or bunnies. That would be a solution if your pup keeps spilling water. I agree it must be uncomfortable to sit on a damp or wet blanket! Good luck!

Heavy ceramic bowl in the corner worked for me - now I block The Girls in the whole kitchen and use an oval ceramic bowl and just happen to find a heavy wicker basket the same shape that the water bowl fits in for extra support from tip overs.

maybe try a hand towel under the steel bowl to grab the water??? My sister has a water bowl that is hooked to the 1st horizontal wire in her Pom's crate and he can't turn it over. There may be something like that at Pet Smart or Wally World - that's where she loves to shop.

Try a water bottle. I've used that with puppies for some time now and had good success.

Water bottles work well for adults and puppies. There are also coop cups in several versions that can be attached to crate doors and/or the sides of metal crates.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! The coop cup sounds exactly like something that would work for Dudley.

All the suggestions above sound like good choices, but we thought we'd throw our two cents in. They make a no-spill water bowl that has a tupperware type cover on it with a smaller diameter hole in the middle. We got one for Ace and it did help until he figured out how to rip the cover off of it and fling it over his puppy gate into the living room! (Not to say that Dudley would do this ).

Here is a picture of the one we got at Petsmart:

I started cracking up laughing just picturing Ace whipping that thing over his gate! I don't know that Dudley is "bright" enough to figure something like that out...but I'm sure he would find a way to eat it if at all possible It is a really neat concept though.

And thanks to Emilie for offering to send me her bowl! What a super person

We use flat-sided metal pails - they attach to the door with a bolt snap (bought separately) and stay out of the dog's way. Also easy to clean!
