What do you feed? - 02-13-2007, 09:34 PM

So wow....a website committed to Corgis. This might be the coolest site ever!

We have one Corgi who is pampered to extreme, as they all should be. One thing I have been striving for is getting the best dry food I can. I know BARF is what is perferable, but it just isn't something we can do right now. I have tried many different ones. She was on Eagle Pack Holistic for awhile and while she did fine, she seemed to be "bored" with it. Tried EVO. Mistake. Messy. Tried Blue Buffalo and she liked it but also liked eating her 'poo'. Now trying Merrick Turducken. I have been giving thought of taking a back of regular food and mixing in a bag of EVO-like to get more protien for her, but without something that would be too rich.

So what is everyone else feeding? Any advice of food that is best for Corgis? Especially one that doesn't make the breath stinky!

What a pretty boy, whats his name ?

I feed a few foods in rotation. Eagle pack holistic fish, Timberwolf ocean blue and Timberwolf dakota bison. Mine also love Innova evo canned 95% beef and canned Eagle pack holistic duck.

I have been very pleased with both TWO and EP. Poos are just a little bit smaller on TWO.
I have also fed Natural balance all three allergy formulas with good results.

I should also add my 2 have iron tummys and I never have any problems changing foods cold turkey. But I hear very often from other people that they have to change very gradual or they have explosive diarrhea.

I have 2 corgi's.
Darci is almost 3 and Egan is almost 1.

Btw Welcome to the board.

This is just the new kid site on the block. Many, many of them out there and have been for years.

There are a number of detailed threads on foods and feeding in the archives.
Food and feeding is a topic that lends itself to hot debate most of the time.

First of all, Darci....Thanks for turning me on this site!

My boy is actually a Girl Her name is Sadie. And she is a big bundle of silly, nutty, loving, COMPLETELY NEUROTIC(sp) energy. I used to use Timberwolf, but I can't get it locally anymore. I hear alot of good things about it, but I don't want to have to rely on shipping from them especially with their history of limited customer service I have had with them. She does have "messes" in that back end area if we switch too quickly.

We got a Corgi after my folks. They originally bought 1 girl and she was great. Soon they got another girl. After the first one passed, they got a boy and recently got another boy. The 2 boys they actually had brought over from Ireland, believe it or not. We thought about getting another, but Sadie will have no part of that. She is truely and Alpha dog. She owns us.

Wellness (too fishy), Merrick (trying now), Innova, Eagle Pack, Paul Newman, Solid Gold (but not the bark at the moon), the normal. Maybe I should write Timberwolf to see if they have a retail place in Nashville.

Above is a site that shows 8 local stores you might check and see what that carry.

The store that carries Solid Gold you may ask them if they will order Bark at the moon for you.

Welcome; your Sadie is beautiful

I feed mine Natural Balance - they have three that I rotate between(The single protein ones) because Cody had some loose stool issues on a couple of other brands, and the Natural Balance has helped a lot.

Cindy/Darci always has good suggestions on what may be good to feed.

I haven't tried the Timberwolf, but I would like to try it.

dry dog food - 02-14-2007, 12:12 AM

We use Nature's Recipe (buy at Petsmart/USA) for all of our dogs. The labrador we acquired from my daughter's fathers house was in sad shape - overweight and having hip/arthritis problems (old dog). We put him on the senior dog formula and his coat/weight/vitalilty have improved. Our chihuahua's eat the regular formula and Delilah is still on the puppy brand. Yes, it can get expensive, but how much can a chihuahua eat in a week.. LOL

Sampson, labrador, gets 2 cups in the am.....Delilah gets about 1 cup morning and night....the chihuahuas get 1 cup each in the am.... None of the dogs is overweight, all coats gleam with health. gums are pink and healthy. Vet is pleased with overall condition of all the dogs.

We feed either Hills or Eukanuba Adult - large dog size kibble. This comes from the vet and costs an arm and a short leg, but is worth it. Poor Mousie got the dog roll from the supermarket - not the cheapest, but dog roll. We were much poorer then and more ignorant. She had lots of problems with itchy skin on her tummy and I reckon that may have been due in part to the poorer quality food.

Clogs occasionally gets dog-breath, and when she does, I find that giving her a small breakfast of around 1/4 of a teaspoonful of crushed garlic mixed well into a couple of tablespoons of yogurt, and then thinned with some pet milk will reduce the stinkyness considerably. Interestingly, she does not end up with garlic breath. The garlic seems to neutralise the stink.

Clogs - My Taylor will be onto Hills soon - its my next big bag buy and I have a $10 voucher off its price. It is one of the dearest of the dry food range on the market but considered the best by NZ's leading canine nutritionist. At present Taylor is into feasting on food won in competitions. So it is Eukanuba and Bosch at the moment. We might pick up some more Bosch over this weekend as Taylor and I have two days of agility competition.
Chunky dog roll - which is the best of all dog rolls on the market in NZ, contains garlic - and small pieces of the chicken version of the roll are the treats I usually give Taylor apart from givng him a slice of the roll as part of his daily meal.
I am very proud of the article I have recently completed which tells the readers "the best food to feed your dog so as he/she can live the longest and healthiest." I consider this the most important story or article I have done to date concerning dogs because there isn't much else that is more vital than the food you give your dog every day. If anyone would like a copy of the article which will appear in magazines from April, 2007 and include a photo of KatC's Corgi Abby with a fresh meat bone in her mouth, contact me by email and I'll eventually send you a copy.

Anyone try Merrick? My local petstore where I got Eagle Pack started carrying it and had a special on it. It has about 5-6 different flavor varieties. The ingredients look good also.

How much do you feed your Corgis? I feed Sadie 1/2 cup twice a day.

Welcome! Sadie is really beautiful. I have a 21 month old red and white pem named Dillon and soon a second 28 month old red and white pem named Gus ( adopting him on saturday) Gus is eating exclusively timberwolf wild n natural and Dillon has a rotation of : timberwolf elk and salmon, timberwolf ocean blue, timberwolf wild n natural and nature's balance fish and potato. I have tried solid gold and the shape of the pieces is a choking hazzard for Dillon, innova was too rich and he got the runs, wellness is what he was eating but I have taken him off that for the timberwolf and he is doing so great on it. I have tried the eagle pack holistic and it just never settled with him as good and his output seemed more...not sure why that was. I also feed a small bit of canned food in with the dry , i have decided that my two f
