Does anyone know anything about Chicken Soup for Dog Lovers dog food? I am feeding Sassy's Hill's Science Diet but after reading ingredients on dog food comparison site I am not impressed.

Why yes I do! I like it very much and have been pleased with the results I've gotten feeding it. My sister used the puppy when Berry's litter were baby puppies for weaning. I've used the adult and my dogs were in great condition with it. I'm now using the senior formula (just really like the ingredient list) for the bulk of my dogs. I read on a show list recently that a breeder uses the senior for ALL her dogs. I noticed someone posted a check list to grade one's kibble (also had seen it on another list) and Chicken Soup got an A+.

First five ingredients on the senior are chicken, turkey, chicken meal, cracked pearl barley, white rice ...
Protein level is 22%, which for seniors is good - higher protein levels can put strain on kidneys.

AAFCO statement: Animal feeding tests using Association of American Feed Control Officials procedures substantiates that Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul Senior Dog provides complete and balanced nutrition for the maintenance of adult dogs.

Right now all I have around now is a senior bag in this brand, but have used all the others.

Now for those who are Costco members, you might want to check out the Kirkland store brand of dog food. It is an excellent food, also got an A+ on the grading quiz and very economical. It is made by the same company as Chicken Soup and is similar in ingredients.

The Chicken and Rice for adults, first five ingredients: chicken, chicken meal, whole grain brown rice, cracked pearl barley, chicken fat (preserved with tocopherols and Vitamin E) ...

Protein level is 26%

Thanks Debbie for the info on Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul. I am going to find it on line and order some. I am just not pleased at all with Hill Science Diet, I went to their site and they actually use peanut shells for fiber in their adult formula and their first ingredient is corn, there is no mention of meat till about the fifth ingredient and it is chicken and that is the only meat in their dog food. Going to definitely change Sassy's food.

Isn't the "meat/chicken" listed as chicken by-products? By-products are simply a "combulation" of any and every body part put into a big vat/giant crock pot and cooked until they turn into a "soup" and this is sprayed on the kibbles. By-products can also include animals from rendering plants.

Meal, such as chicken meal is different. Whole chicken/meats have a lot of water in them. When made into meal, the water is pressed out of them so you are left with a more concentrated source of nutrition.

I'll admit to being disappointed in her website, more like an advertisement for the brand of food she recommends; but there are tidbits of good information. From the discussions they have had over her several the host has compiled a list of things to avoid in a pet food.
