Alice is big on drinking water. If Taylor drank as much water as she does in cool weather, I'd be worried. An unusual thirst is one of the danger signs of a possible serious problem. Taylor is not into consuming lots of water and even after a good workout in the summer he is a light lapper-upper. But in Alice's case I believe it is a lot to do with her dry food diet. Some foods simply give dogs a thirst or at least make them more thirsty than otherwise would be the case. It is much like certain foods that we humans eat - such as salty food or hot spicy food etc. Alice is on Pedigree mealy bites - not in any way my choice of food - and to me this food is creating her thirst. Not a good look for a daily diet her owners give her not once a day but twice.

We feed the dogs Iams diet dog food. Molsen is always drinking water, but Miller only drinks on occasion. Molsen has done this since he was a puppy... I don't know how much he injests, because alot of it ends up on the floor.

What are the serious issues that could result in dogs drinking lots of water?

As medical concerns, diabetes and kidney issues are two that come to mind if a dog _begins_ drinking lots of water. Copious amounts of water after eating a meal followed by strenuous exercise could result in bloat.

Early in my corgi days we fed Pedigree (not sure if it the same formula as Alice is on or not) as was recommended by Misty's breeder. She nor any of their other corgis drank inordinate amounts of water. Could be the Pedigree isn't the optimum food for Alice or she may just be a "drinker." Perhaps you should have her owners get in touch with Dr. Cave and maybe share your opinions on foods, enlighten them about the AAFCO? When she turns seven, she'll need to move to senior formulas won't she?

I looked after Alice (a very sweet and lively 6 year old Pem) for 17 days and will have her back for several days in a few weeks time
