The top treat for dogs in the USA are Greenies.

Approved by AAFCO, Greenies reduce tarter by 62% and plaque by 14% when given once daily.

Greenies are overpriced IMO, but more people buy them than anything else which is probably why they're considered "top".

My dogs get RMBs to reduce tartar and plaque, and the vets couldn't be more impressed. They also don't cost $20 a bag lol...

I'm gonna try a free sample. Sophie likes getting her teeth brushed, but maybe she'll like this more.

There is still a lot of caution and apprehension about Greenies after all the adverse incidents with them.

I know nothing much about Greenies - you can't buy them in NZ. Only know that they are number one treat in the USA and the USA Vets organisation ((only treat to receive the vets oral health council approval) loves them. Since 1998 750 million sold in the USA.

There have been incidents of choking with the greenies that glencorgi is talking about. Duncan and Chloe get them minimum. I got them an Easy Brush, which is a vinyl apparatus that has little brushes on both sides on each end. Put a little doggie toothpaste on it, work it into the brushes and give it to them to chew on for about 5 minutes. Saves me a lot of fighting with Duncan, but Chloe just licks the paste off. I see me paying for dental work for her in the future. Here's the website:

I'm wrong. You can buy Greenies in New Zealand. They are expensive - large single Greenies sell at $NZ6. They do come recommended by the shop -ahead of other similar and cheaper versions which they say can promote dystentary.

My dogs never seemed to chew the greenies enough - then they'd vomit big chunks up... I read bad stuff about choking too and stopped giving them to my boys.

I read a lot about numerous dogs choking or dying of intestinal blockages from swallowing big chunks too. Plus the ingredients are not what I want to put into Charlie's system:

Greenies ingredients: Processed wheat gluten, glycerin, natural flavor, powdered cellulose fiber, monosodium phosphate, monoglycerides of edible fatty acids, magnesium stearate and chlorophyll

I was disgusted by the ingredients in almost all packaged dog treats though.

Charlie's favorite treat is little pieces of unseasoned, boiled chicken. I take the skin off, boil a whole package, cool it, bone it, dice it into tiny pieces, then freeze 1-2 tablespoons packets in saran wrap. Cheap. Easy. Low fat/calorie. ...and I know what's in it. Next time, I think I'm going to try drying pure chicken or beef jerky bits for him...less messy.

As for the teeth cleaning...Charlie loves to have his teeth brushed!

In February Taylor won a competition and part of his prize was a packet of 60 thin cigar shape treats consisting of hide (???), water and sticky rice. So a few weeks ago i opened the package and gave Taylor one and he quickly ate it. The next night I did the same but he thought less of it and a couple of days later Taylor declined to take it and eat it. Another day or two and the same again. Oh well, I'll take the pack of treats to the Corgis on the WWCWC walk and picnic. So I handed them out at the picnic and only one of the Corgis was tempted by them. Needless to say that I finally got the message and threw away the rest. If a Corgi don't like the treat, something is wrong with the treat....... and if nothing else, it is not to be trusted.
