Maintaining their Weight - 09-27-2007, 06:44 AM

Molsen and Miller are slightly below their goal weight at 23 & 25 lbs. I am trying to find a way to help them maintain their weight without gaining too much weight back. I don't want to cut back on the excersize, because they enjoy the activities.

So that leaves the food... I have tried increasing their food by 1/4 increments, but Molsen started getting sick over night (maybe he is bulimic)and Miller started to gain weight. We tried giving them a few extra treats a day, but that is hard to regulate. Does anyone have any ideas? I just don't want them to continue to loose weight.

Don't cut back on exercise because a Corgi can't really get too much of it in a sense.
Don't iincrease the type of food that they currently get but add supplements such as a little diced cooked meat daily, a couple of tablespoons of cooked brown rice daily, several small peices of raw veggies such as broccoli, cauli, cabbage, spinach, silverbeet, pumpkin(shredded).

Thanks Michael. I will try that with Molsen & Miller this week. They love getting health snacks.

Yesterday, I was cooking sweet potatoes (yams). I peeled the potatoes, and just to see if he liked them, I gave Charlie a couple small slivers of the raw potato skin. He really did like it and wanted more, but I wasn't sure if it was ok to give them to him. If it is ok, then I'll be happy to give him more skins since they go in the trash otherwise.

As a supplement to kibble, brown rice and chicken etc., I've found The Missing Link Plus is a great supplement to their diet and give it once a day to Bubba-usually the evening meal. With the glucosamine, it has an extra bonus of helping with any possible future joint problems. I can't get him to eat broccoli, cauli, and carrots very well but, he will take them occasionally steamed. He likes the carrots pretty well but, usually will eat around the broccoli.

Bubba sounds like a typical kid eating around the broccoli.

I don't think he cares for "mushy" stuff much, Bonnie. This morning I added part of a banana to his kibble and had about a tablespoon of pumpkin in his bowl as well. He moved it all around to get to the kibble and ate a little of the pumpkin but deposited the bananas outside the bowl on the carpet!!

Sweet potatoes (called kumera in New Zealand) and potatoes are the only veggies that should be always given to dogs cooked.
I give Taylor slightly boiled carrot slices because he doesn't like them raw. Taylor prefers the non-flower end ( the stalk)of the broccoli which is equally as beneficial. Bananas are an acquired taste for a dog as are quite a few fruits.

Smile My overweight corgi - 03-24-2008, 03:00 PM

My female corgi, Gizmo, is about 31 lbs. I know she is overweight but she is fed just under 1cup of Canidae /day so I don't feel I can cut this down anymore. It seems like so little already! Does anyone have any suggestions for "fillers" that have little calories that I can add to her food if I cut down on the dry stuff? So she feels full?

Veggies-frozen green beans, canned pumpkin, fresh apples, etc.

Give her just a slightly smaller amount of her kibble, then fill in with the above.

Do you give her rawhides, hooves, chew bones, treats during the day? rawhides are very fattening as well as the other treats.

You can also fill up a kong with a light chicken broth, fit in some veggies or fruit and freeze it for a light treat during the day.

A lot of members here have had good success with using green beans as a low-cal filler for their weight loss plan.

Besides the things Cindy suggested, unsalted popcorn or puffed rice can be use. Either as a filler or low cal snack.

If Gizmo is on less than one cup of quality dry kibble a day, how come she is still considerably overweight?
You must add to your cup/s ALL the food Gizmo gets most days or some days. All the tit bits, treats, scraps, steals etc. If she is being exercised correctly, then the weight must come off providing the food intake is up to scratch.
