onions versus garlic - 11-26-2005, 04:41 AM

I was told that onions are not safe to feed to my dog. But then the breeder said that garlic a few times a week will keep ticks and fleas away. since garlic and onions are in the same family I don't understand how this can be. Of course at the time I was too excited about getting my Duchess to think of asking about it. .

Hi Jane
Onions cause hemolytic anemia in dogs and they are not of any benefit in any way to dogs as a food. So no onions - they're toxic, though a few bits of onion mixed with other food won't do your Corgi much harm.

Garlic can also be toxic to dogs but the differences between garlic and onions are that in small amounts, garlic is safe and it is beneficial with a myriad of things such as gas, flea prevention and as a natural antibiotic.

My Taylor gets a small amount of garlic daily through the chicken roll part of his dinner. This dog roll contains garlic.
