I do try to keep in the 26 -28 % range for protein based on things I have been taught, learned and picked up over the years. Now I can understand where the source of the protein would be a factor in the body's ability to process it, but still 40% is a lot of protein for a daily diet <imho>. For a dog that is being actively and intensely trialed in field events or agility perhaps, but otherwise ???
For corgi puppies, I don't like the really "hot" (high protein) foods and follow the thinking of large breed breeders on their puppies. I prefer a slower, steady growth which can avoid things like panosteitis in puppies.
Long term, as you mentioned, the wear on the kidneys is a concern I also have.

Deb,
I had thought that is what you said. This lady, however, was saying that it
depends where the protein comes from in regards to "high protein", She said
that if the High protein was coming from meats, versus, grains, then it was
better for them, but wouldn't too much of any protein, no matter what source, not be all that good on their kidneys?

Unless you are trying to sell dog food, apparently!

Okay, I did a little more thinking and talked to a friend and not sure I have any more answers than I did earlier. The raw diet, which "simulates" canine diet in the wild, is high in protein. In a discussion about the raw diet on another list what someone stressed was that one didn't try to feed a "balanced" diet everyday, rather it was balanced over time - such as a period of days, so it wouldn't be like a dog was getting 40% protein on a daily basis.
In looking at Innova EVO <http://www.naturapet.com/display.php?d=product-detail&pxsl=%2F%2Fproduct%5B%40id%3D%271246%27%5D> which has 42% protein, it is not a food that is supposed to be fed daily, rather: "At Natura, we understand that it isn't always possible to feed your pet a raw diet. This is until now. Innova EVO is also a convenient, complete and balanced supplement to a raw feeding program.
Innova EVO...What to feed when you can't feed raw"
Some dogs have problems with too much protein and have reactions such as hot spots and in the thread on licking the foot, it was mention there can be allergies to too much protein.
In the context of a raw diet, I wouldn't be too concerned about the protein levels; in a kibble brand ... hmmm, I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with that. I'll see what else I can find out.

There are just toooo many different types of dog foods out there now and one could go a little crazy trying to find the perfect one - all the different grains, some have yogurt, some high protein, the fiber contents, whether they have "by products" the preservatives used, sensitive stomach ones, small breed food, etc.etc. It seems that quite often when I go into the pet store, another new food by a company is for sale and they all boast benefits for a healthy pet
