Who Feeds Raw?

Just wondering who else feeds a raw diet to their Corgis. Ever since I've made the switch Conan has been healthier than ever. I've found a few threads on here and one was surprisingly filled with false information.

Anyway, I'd love to know who else feeds raw and what your Corgi's favorite meals are!

Hey Katie,

I was actually reading about the RAW diet, and I was very intrigued by it. I think I'll research a bit more and get Zoe on it. I feed her Wellness right now which is really good, but I like what I've read so far about RAW. Do you happen to know a good resource or site with reliable information? I'm hoping that I'm not reading the wrong thing.

Oh and give my big doggy hug to Conan!

Thanks,
Kristal & Zoe

Absolutely! I read these two books before I made the switch. They are both great beginner books, but Raw Dog Food is less technical and easier to understand. I still use them as guides sometimes.

Raw Dog Food
Amazon.com: Raw Dog Food: Make It Easy for You and Your Dog (9781929242092): Carina Beth Macdonald: Books

Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats
Amazon.com: Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats (9781561706365): Kymythy Schultze: Books

Good luck! Let me know how it goes and if you have any questions.

Send Zoe a big doggy hug too!

I feed a prey model raw diet to my puppers, and am amazed at the results.

Grissom is such a food mongrel he loves everything I let him eat, but his favorite is probably rabbit and pork.

He's always on the lookout for food. Little stinker.

That's great! I feed a prey model also. Conan loves everything so far, I'm still trying to figure out his favorites. He's always looking for food too!

Forgive my ignorance... What is a prey model diet?

Panda says ... "Raw Food Rocks!" Cluck! Cluck!

I am feeding my Corgi, Panda, 50% Blue Buffalo and 50% raw chicken quarters (6 ounces). She is almost 2-years old and I have been feeding her 1/2 raw for about 7 months ... she is incredibly healthy and strong. Panda weighs almost 29 pounds, so based on 2-3% of her body weight (as suggested by Vannette on GoCorgi ... many thanks!), her requirement would be 13 ounces of raw per day more or less using a total raw diet. Panda is very lean and toned. She gets tons and tons of exercise. We are together 24/7 and are constantly on the go around the ranch and in the mountains. PS ... Panda thinks Conan is a seriously rockin' dude!

Zoesmom, the prey model is just another version of feeding a raw diet. I don't really take into account the two different methods, but I just found that I feed more like the prey model than the BARF model.

Basically, you make a prey animal for your dog. A certain amount of bone, muscle meat, organ meat, etc. Instead of feeding a whole animal, like a whole chicken (which is too big for my dogs in one meal), I just sort of make what is commonly known as franken prey. Like this morning, I fed chicken backs (which have a good amount of bone, organs, and muscle meat) and ground turkey for more muscle meat, along with their supplements. Does that make sense? I'm not the best at explaining.

PJ.. glad Panda is doing well! Conan and I both think she's a gorgeous gal She's got an adorable name too!

I don't, yet. Enda gets raw evening because she has problem digesting kibble, and I do share some of hers with Jinjo (except chicken nights, because Jinjo can't have chicken, why I can't do raw with him yet, too expensive). I do a semi-mix. Sometimes its just meat and additives (vitamins, etc), sometime if I want/have to stretch it I will fill it up with veggies. I don't sadly have the raw sites I love on this computer, but I was given one once that had a really good calculator on it, said for Jinjo he should have 3/4lb, can't remember if that was once or twice a day though?

Have you looked for raw feeding groups? I'm a part of a co-op and I get my stuff CHEAP. That's the only way I can afford it. Keep looking around. I can get 40lbs of chicken backs for $15, for example. Had to buy an extra freezer!

That makes a lot of sense Katie.

I need to find a co-op too-- I hope Vegas has something similiar.

Although I'm sure they are around quite a few area's, we're small town, even the larger area's. We are however, looking into local butchers to see about that route. Problem is again, Jinjo can't have any white meat other wise I would be doing this full time by now. I'm hoping, with so many goat raisers in the area I can make out with a butcher or meat market.

It would definitely be harder to feed a dog who can't have chicken. Good luck on your search!!

I haven't been able to find a co-op in Vegas yet, but we do have a Ranch 99 store which is GREAT for harder to find things like heart and various whole fish.

I feed Grissom either a chicken thigh or drumstick every night, and his morning meals are a rotation of chicken, turkey, beef, pork, rabbit, duck, and fish. I don't grind anything, ever. I will only feed ground meat if I find a really super good deal on it. Otherwise I buy mostly chicken quarters (so cheap) whole turkey (which does take a while to cut down into meals, but worth it) pork shoulder roasts, whole duck, whole rabbit, some canned mackeral, whole talapia, salmon, etc.

I feed no veggies, fruits, or grains. I also don't give supplements because with a well rounded diet from a variety of animals, including meat, bones, and organs (sometimes eggs) nothing else is needed.

Linsey: What's your average cost feeding on a raw diet here in Vegas? And when you say tilapia-- of course this is raw right? With bones and everything?

Seafood City is also good-- they have great meats there as well as SF Supermarket which isn't too far from Ranch 99. Seafood City is over on Maryland Pkwy & Flamingo.
