Water question - 07-29-2006, 11:38 PM

I fill my dog's water bowl with filtered (PUR) water. Sometimes I give tap water (when filtered or bottled are not available). I was just wondering what everyone else uses. Does it make a difference? I am sure it does in places where the tap is not safe.

The best water available in its most pure form, is the ultimate for dogs.
If you are really keen of giving your dog the most healthiest food, lifestyle and medical care, you will give him/her clean, clear, pure water with no chemical additives. But as with food, dogs will happily and ignorantly consume water from anywhere and if an owner has lower expectations - which covers most of us - then normal tap water is fine, water from rivers and lakes is fine. I suppose, rain water, collected in a container, would be ideal. In New Zealand, tap water supplied to households is among the world's best for quality - but in almost all parts of NZ the water contains various degrees of fluoride and clorine. And this is not great for some people and is not a recommended additive for dogs. Yet most people including myself, will give their dogs our fresh tap water. It doesn't harm the dogs substantially but it also is not the the ultimate in healthy substances. A water purifier which can also extract the fluoride and clorine and any other chemicals from the home water supply, as well as other things that worm their way into the water, would be a better option. I can get a bucket fill of pure artesian water from a public use tap after a 20 minute (return) drive from where I live. This would be excellent water for my Pem.

My Oliver has had many allergy issues and I have gone the whole route trying to get some relief for him. Nothing worked until I went to the BARF diet and spring water - (Skippy does not have allergies, but he gets the same diet and water) - also Pur water and ice. They will of course drink about any water they see if not supervised, but it has made an appreciable improvement in their coats!

I give regular tap water or sometimes filtered water. It depends on your tap water source and if it's good enough. NYC's tap water is actually one of the best in the US. In the hot summer months, I try to change it often and give cold water.

My kids get Tap water. At my sisters she has a well and Pockets has reverse osmosis water when we are there. When we are driving he gets ice water from McD or where ever I stop for pop.

SweetlyChee:

That is one thing I do miss from NY is the tap water - it comes from the Springs up North and is very good and cold!

Well water here! Well, except for the past 2 days when I had a vein in my well collapse and now my water is a lovely shade of gray. My plumber says the well is fine, let the clay settle. It could take 2 days, it could take 10 days. So we are all drinking natural spring water from the springs nearby or bottled water. And bathing in the lake each morning is a real thrill for all involved!

I only give my Corgi Bottled water. I have heavily softened water in my house plus it's easier if you are traveling. That way they don't get an upset stomach.
