Are you sure it is the tomato itself that can be harmful for arthritic dogs and not the green parts of the plant. Tomatoes are fruit and they have never been considered harmful for dogs. I would have thought it was a bit like rhubarb - the vegetable (yes, it is a veggie) is ok for people but the leaves are poison.
Taylor has never been given tomatoes - not that he has arthritis - but it is not the kind of food I would think to give to dogs.

Okay, I had not heard this about the fruit itself and I do give the corgis bits of tomatoes from time to time. Tomato sauce added to their food I have heard helps with urinary tract health and I will add that occasionally too.

The leaves I knew were toxic. Another toxic one is the green parts of potatoes.

I have a friend who is chemical sensitive and she also is not supposed to eat anything in the nightshade family. Tomatoes, potatoes and eggplant are the three biggies. I have given Duchess pieces of tomato and V8 juice, which I thought would give her a lot of vitamins. I even froze some tomato juice in ice cubes for treats. Lately she is not going upstairs as fast. I thought it was time to take another look at her diet and the treats that she gets. I am embarressed to say I let her put on a bit of weight because I love her with food. After all she doesn't want me to hug her and doesn't play wrestle. What am I to do?
I added the pumpkin to her daily feedings and cut the treats to tiny ones and veggies. Hopefully she will be more active in the cooler weather.

Thanks so much for this post. Chip and Maybelle were at the back of our fenceline this morning and wouldn't come when called so I walked down and the neighbor had stacked spoiled tomatoes up against our fence and some had rolled over to our side. I very kindly threw them back over their fence (well maybe not so kindly) and got Chip and Maybelle away from that area. I hate to think bad about people, but it makes one wonder what the purpose of that was.
