Baby corn treats - 09-24-2006, 03:45 PM

I am wondering if anyone ever tried the baby corn on the cob, you know like is found in chow mein, etc. I bought some for Sassy and she will eat it raw but prefers it to be cooked. I am trying to find other veggies, she LOVES celery and carrots, hates green beans and now I have tried the baby corn. What other veggies do you all give to your Corgis as treats. I am trying to stay away from the store bought treats but she does get the Prescription treats by Science Diet once in awhile, but she (I) prefer veggies and healthier type treats. Please send me ideas. She liked cantolope and watermelon in small moderation but they are out of season now. All ideas welcome.

We haven't tried too many things. However, Ace loves apples. I will give him small pieces without the skin as treats. He also likes carrots if they are shredded. He won't eat them if they are whole or sliced. We'll have to try the baby corn. Maybe he'll like that too!

Cody likes carrots and green beans and I also give him peas, either the frozen ones(but thawed out) or the Canned ones with no salt added) I also give him canned pumkin which he loves.

Does Sassy like strawberries or blueberries or bananas? You can always get bananas anytime of the year and Cody loves those.

I give The Girls apple, greenbeans, peas, carrots, little bit mellon. Chloe will try anything but this list is about all the veggies Emma will try.

Oh I also add canned pumkin to their meals - Em has a funny tummy and the pumpkin keeps her regular.

Hi Bajoiner,

I have read in one of the doggie books that we shld not feed our furkids with corn. It is said that they will get stucked on the "holes" in ther stomach & they will be unable to digest them. Causing the corn to decompose in their little tummy. There were even stories of owners finding undigested rotten corn in their dog's poop after feeding them with detoxifying supplements.

I love love love love loooovvvvveeeee Corgis!!!
I have discovered Corgis ONLY expand SIDE WAYS.

I can see that happening - dogs dont really have the right teeth for chewing corn and do a lot of gulping. And we all know little children who eat corn can go undigested ... not a good visual LOL

Veggie wise corn is on the list as high in starch and on the No list at Weight Watchers - not that I have any 1st hand knowlege of WW

Well Sassy knows best I guess, she does not care for the baby corn. She ate one piece and that was it for her. I have not tried the can pumpkin, but Sassy does love bananas. She will not eat apples, but I heard that apples were not good for dogs either. I have also tried tomatoes and green beans and she will eat neither. Guess I will just use trial and error. Thanks for the input everyone.

Here is a list of treats suggested for Corgis. This list was from the Welsh Corgi
edition magazine that I purchased in December 2005, From the Editors of Dog Fancy Magazine.

Low Calorie dog biscuits, plain, mini rice cakes, raw or lightly cooked vegetables; Broccoli, carrots, green beans, cooked pumpkin and squash. No onions,(toxic to dogs) or rhubarb or spinach(which are high in oxalates(Potentially harmful to kidneys)

Fresh fruits, such as bananas, apples, berries or melon.
whole grain toast, no butter
fat free whole grain crackers such as Wasa Crispbread
A dollop of plain low-fat yogurt or cottage cheese
hard boiled egg whites, or fat free egg products such as Egg Beaters
Plain boiled rice, barley or bulger wheat
Lean, cooked meats, diced into tiny morsels.

Just want to that I found out not too long ago that grapes and raisins can also be bad for dogs.

Thank you so much Linda that will help a lot. I will try her on some of those. No I never give her onions, grapes, raisins, chocolate or nuts. She absolutely LOVES celery and bananas and would eat those over her kibble if I would let her but I only give her one small piece per day and she loves the baby carrots also but once they get the least bit old she won't eat them. I keep her celery cut up and cleaned and in water in the frig and it will last a while. I will try the broccoli and mini rice cakes. I am trying to get her about 5 pounds lighter as she weighs 32 pounds (per my bathroom scales). Thanks again.

Barbara- nuts are very good for Corgis. The only type of nut that is toxic to dogs is macadamia. I'm sure you give your Corgi peanut butter - and that's mostly nuts - the peanut variety of course.

Yes I give Sassy peanut butter which she has to be in the mood to eat. Sometimes she will and other times no. I have put it lightly on her celery and sometimes she will eat it and other times I have to wipe off the peanut butter as she LOVES her celery and will eat the celery once the peanut butter is gone. I do believe Sassy is just finicky which is fine with me. And I tried broccoli raw and cooked and she wanted nothing to do with it. Back to just trying different things.

Thanks
Barbara
