Sometimes training actually works... -

I'm soooooo proud!
This morning I had Tucker and Lulu off leash at the elementary school running around the athletic field. I didn't hear a runner approaching us but knew something was up when both dogs suddenly were paying attention behind me.
I saw the runner approaching us and told both: "Sit". They did! I added "Stay". And Tucker did!!!!! Hooray!
He sat quietly and watched the man avoid running over Lulu who broke her "stay" and had to go introduce herself.
What a GOOD BOY! It killed him to not run and meet a new person but he sat, looked at me for his release word, and waited patiently until I had apologized profusely to the runner and got Lulu under control.
Lots of praise and pats on the head for that one (I had no treats w/ me!).
Yes, sometimes all this training actually pays off!

Even when it is not really necessary, isn't nice to ask your Corgi to sit and stay and they do for as long as it takes you to give them the next instruction.
I have a three-legged set of instructions - the first is HOLD IT (stop 'dead'), then SIT and then STAY.
Good on you Susan, It is a excellent achievement especially when you only half expect it to go to plan. I'm certain you will have both dogs doing it in unionism before long.

I do not even know you or your dogs and I'm proud!!! That is the one thing that my husband and I wanted from Miss Gambler, instant and quick obedience, without hesitation, but we have broken so many rules(rules that we swore we would never break) in raising her, yet I am proud, very proud, and your post gives me hope. And don't worry about not having a treat to reward, I bet that you were so happy and proud that your dogs will quickly attempt to please you again, but you remember the treats next time, just in case.

Someone, Bless her heart, trained Duchess well. Not that she would obey me on a "hold it" when there was anything to chase, but one day on a leash she stopped when I said "wait". I was thrilled that she knew that she should slow up till I came aside her.
If Duchess was a puppy or young dog I would bring her to obedience school to train myself to be able to train her. But at her age ( 8) I just want to make her life as great as I possibly can. We work on "shush" when she gets excited and barks when coming in after potty. And she has issues with anxieties but I am very proud of her. Everyday I say "Lucky, lucky me!"
Yes Susan, I know the joy you feel when your dog obeys and I am also proud to know Tucker and Lulu.

Good boy Tucker!!! I know you must be proud and feeling gratification, pride and maybe a little bit of relief that all the time, work and effort you've put into training has paid off. Good job both of you.

That was a terrific test for your puppies and it sounds like they both at least tried, and Tucker... way to go!! Nice work... I know I have a lot of work to do with Checkers to get him listening to me again... I've been slacking! Now that bar is set... time to get to work!

Lulu is 6 months old now and most definately in the "teen years" phase. She has gotten so defiant lately.
When the two are outside and I call them to come in, she flatly refuses. So I close the door and leave her outside even though Tucker is already in. When I go back to try again, I open the door, call her, and of course she sits about 10 feet from me and refuses to move. Tucker charges out, barks at her, nips her on the ear as if to say "Mom said get in the house!"
But... Tucker got through it and so will she!
