It is amazing how well the goodie containers work! We use them alot in our classes. We also will use goodie toys for dogs who aren't really into toys at the start- brings out a lot of toy drive when you combine the food and the toy.
Having a few different motivators is really important- that way you don't have a treat dependant dog! Good luck to those of you going for your CGC. Sam got his no prob, and he is a pretty friendly guy (his way of greeting people is jumping up and down like a jack rabbit, all the while barking!), the nice thing about the CGC is that it is pretty casual, so you can talk calmly to them and remind them to have manners. I haven't tried it with Wicca yet, but will in the spring. -amanda

Put Dylan & I in the line up with the sign: "Will Work for Treats (only)"
When we were training for our first freestyle comp. about three weeks prior, it dawned on my that I was still stuffing his fuzzy little cheeks to keep his attention. The instructor said to start weaning him off one by one. Instead of giving him a treat after a certain move, wait until he has done two, then next time three and so on. He said that the dog would think that I just forgot to give it too him, but he knew that it was coming. Eventually we could get through the entire 1.5 min routine and then I would jackpot him with something worth waiting for. His poached chicken breast pieces & cheese. When he smells me packing that bundle up he now knows that this is going to be serious work!

That is too funny.. Dillon knows when we are getting ready to go to school as i use freshly grilled cubed lamb and when he smells it he gets really excited! This is a treat he loves and we only use it for school. I like your method - i will try to wean dillon off the treats this way too...getting him to do a little more for a little less

Give it a shot MGM! One of the great things about rally is it's a lot less stringent than formal obedience competition. You can praise your dog throughout, and (in class and in APDT trials) you can give treats too! So it should be fun for Princess Gambler.

What I like about RallyO is that Tuck and I work as a team. As for the treats, in Rally and Agility, Tuck gets "better treats" at the end of the sequence. He's gotten used to it.
Tuck hates obedience but tolerates Rally. So far Lulu seems to be enjoying Obedience. She will do Rally but I hope she will actually like Obedience as she grows.

We went to Petco last night and Chip was so excited. His favorite place to shop and everybody loves Chip there. Each time someone came around him, he was on his hind legs. I am going to try the special treat for just when he stays sitting and see if that works.

Does anyone have any success teaching their dog it's OK to jump up/stand on their hind legs for them ONLY and not do it to strangers?
I know I should work harder at ending the jump up and smooch thing w/ Tucker but I love coming home to the but wag and jump/smooch. In public if I see someone coming to greet him I start hism out with "sit and wait". Sometimes it works. BUT! All the time he he is sitting and the stranger is cooing and petting him, the butt is wagging and he looks like a rocket that could launch at any second!

Hi Bonnie - we just completed the beginning rally class at our school. Tomorrow we start "Rally Course Work", which is lots of practice with different courses & stuff. And I plan to enter her in her first rally competition in March.
You and Chip will LOOOVE rally. It's a ton of fun!!!

He'll be fine, you can practice at home while you wait for class to begin. It's mostly about teamwork and communication, so just work on those, which I am pretty sure you have down already anyway.

Emilie:
Chip and I are on vacation for the whole month of January and half of December - no work but our little corgis don't forget like we do. We start Rally-O the first week in February. Little Dale will have to stay home though. You and Dillon will be fine.
