Do Corgi's EVER potty train? - 03-31-2007, 05:32 PM

Harley is going on 8 months, he still pees and poops in the house occasionally. Not every day, but when ever he feels like it.

Any suggestions or ideas would be extremely appreciated!

thanks

Hi Marilynn,

Welcome to my world!!!! I just spent the weekend tearing up part of my wall to wall carpeting and installing an inexpensive remnant thanks to Jemma's preference for tinkling in the dining room.

When is he doing this?? For me it's when I'm at work so I've bought a babygate and Miss Jemma is going to spend a month in the kitchen (at least) until I think she has forgotten. She's been in there 2 days and not a tinkle. Also, a crucial thing is getting rid of the smell - they smell it and they will go there again. My carpet was so far gone, my only choice was getting rid of it and throughly cleaning and resealing the hardwood floor before recarpeting.

Patience too - I think will help - anyone have any extra???

Shippo is a year old now, and the only time he ever has a potty accident is when he's sick. We've been in this house since October, and there have been only two Shippo accidents, which I was able to just shampoo out with my carpet steamer. >^^;<

Just use some enzyme cleaners, and give your pup less freedom/supervise more until the potty accidents decrease.

The two tips given me that were most effective:

1) Limit his access/space in the house (use a gate or x pen or crate)until he proves to you he won't potty

2) catch him in the act, quickly usher him outside, encourage him to continue potty and praise

Good luck!

I am just as frustrated. Boots is still struggling. Fisher has the occasional poo poo accident but not much peeing.

I've been lucky. Duncan has piddle pads and goes right to them. Just a couple of accidents, and mainly my fault. Once I didn't put his piddle pads in the exactly same place, and the other; I was changing his pad and didn't have the fresh one with me. So, I went to go get it and just as I got back to the area, away he went!!!!

No solution to offer - just my moral support.
Annie was 4 mos and Joey 5 mos when they came to us. Used same crate and schedule training as our perfectly housebroken previous dogs (three sporting mix breeds) but it seemed much more difficult for the corgis and I had many moments of thinking they would never be housebroken. They will still have an occasional "accident" but I have a sneaky suspicion they are being vindictive and it's not an accident .
We have a fenced yard but during the "process" always went out with them to make sure business was taken care of before play or returning inside.
Good luck and I'm sure Harley will "get it".
Paula
Annie & Joey ... he/she did it - not me!!
PS - no extra patience here.

Wow, I'm feeling a LOT better about my girl all of a sudden.

I felt like such a failure since she wasn't trained till after 5 months (she's now 6 almost 7 months and I can't remember the last accident any more *knocking on wood*).

I had to go on a strict crate training schedule to get her potty trained. I even had to suck up to the Ex. to get him to come take her out while I was at work, not to mention begging my mom to do the same on other days. Even putting her on a strict time controlled scedule, it took about 8 weeks to get her 110% reliable.

She was not allowed play or house roaming time until the 'deed' was done. And I think the occasional accident toward the end was mostly my fault for being distracted.

You have NO idea how guilty I felt since she spent quite some time on some days in her crate. If she wouldn't do her business, she'd have to spend another 15 to 20 in her crate until she finally went. On some days, this seemed to take ALL day (not really but once you go through this for about 2hours, it sure feels like it!!! LOL).

I know it will happen, maybe just changing something, like religiously using a crate for a few weeks? It did work for me and she's a GREAT dog in most respects. Now, if I could get her to stand up for her conformation class and get her to let me clip her nails w/o a struggle, then I'd feel like I accomplished something! LOL

Don't feel bad about Harley - I am still having problems with Andy. I adopted her at a year old from the breeder; at the breeder's she was either in her crate, in a dog run (where she had a "potty corner"), or out in a fenced yard.

She never potties in her crate, but she still has potty accidents over by the front door. More often, it is a pee accident - but sometimes, it's a poo. Usually she gives me enough warning for me to rush her outside before she poos on the floor.

It's frustrating, but don't give up! And don't feel like you're a failure because you're not the only one!!

Chip was 6 months old before he was completely trained and Dale is 4 months old. He had gone a few days without an accident in the house and I was about to declare him pottytrained and right after that he reverted back with 3 accidents in as many days so he still is a work in progress.

Thank you everyone for your responses! Harley has a couple of good days then a few bad ones!

He is just so stinkin' cute!!!! He is our first Corgi so I wondered if it was the breed or if he's just a stubborn boy!

We got our lab when she was not quite 4 months, she had 2 pee accidents in the house, both of them right by the door, and she's not had another accident in 2 years.
