Musical Freestyle - 04-14-2007, 02:34 PM

This isn't QUITE Corgi-related, but while trying to expand my knowledge of the dog world, I stumbled today on the very interesting and entertaining sport of canine musical freestyle! I may just be a little late in learning about this, but in case others are interested, here are some videos:

YouTube - Gladiator dog (canine freestyle)

YouTube - Emily & Henrietta

And, from what I've seen, these two are the masters of musical freestyle...

YouTube - Carolyn Scott & Rookie

Anyone want to weigh on with more knowledge of this? Anyone actually do this with their Corgi?

Barbara (corgimum) does freestyle with her Dylan. They've been sitting out for a while due to Dylan's ACL tear recovery, but hopefully will be tripping the light fandango again very soon. There was a video link of the two of them in the archives.

It is very appropriate to mention the sport of dancing with dogs on Go Corgi because, believe it or not, Corgis are capable of performing reasonably well. In New Zealand the dance competition here is called Paws 'n' Music and is modelled after the British version. I must say that the more leggy dogs (but not heavy or very large/giant breeds) would be the best and the most showy but Corgis can do lots of moves and look really cool. The best I have seen have been Border Collies and Border Collie crosses ( much like the best at agility).

Actually corgis are capable of performing very well. The first demo I heard of was at a Cardigan national many, many years ago. Unfortunately I didn't get to attend, but heard it was pretty awesome. There was a well know team of a Pem and his owner that made appearances pretty much nationwide. Sadly, he has passed away. The top one in the US now is a trainer and her Golden Retriever. I have watched video of them and they are amazing.

Golden Retrievers also seem very adept at dog dancing.
