Herding - 04-18-2006, 06:41 AM

Has anyone had a problem with their puppy herding them around. Nipping at feet and legs? Chip does that and I tell him no and clap my hands but he still herds me. Especially in the morning when I am getting ready for work. I don't think he wants me to leave. This morning he jumped and caught my leg with one tooth and it was deep. He didn't do it on purpose - just trying to herd me. Any suggestions.

Chips Mom,

My Cody sometimes does. . Like, this weekend when my teenage son got up in the morning and came downstairs, Cody was nipping at his feet as he walked barefoot down the hallway. and we had to tell him "no", and he did listen and stop.

He also did it to my daughter's friend this week - not so much nipped at her feet, but had his nose close to them as she walked. This was really the first that I have seen him do that - so I don't know if he is now going to start doing this or what -he is 5 months old.

Chip is 13 weeks old and he has done it since we have had him. He doesn't do it as much, but still pretty often mostly to me. Normally, he doesn't make me bleed, but this morning he sure did. His baby teeth are so sharp.

Maximus did this when we first brought him home. When we would take him out he would run around us and nip at the back of our legs. To correct this we would stop were we were, turn and face him, tell him NO, turn back around and continue walking, when he did not nip we praised him. It took a while put he does not do it any more. His new thing is to growl at my son-in-law when he thinks that he is bothering my daughter. I think Maxi thinks my daughter is his possession and he must protect it. He really has a lot of love for her. Just a new action that we have to figure out how to correct.

Good advise from jhemphill, just be consistant.

The come by it honest as this is what they were bred for, just not pleasant for us owners.

Abby was a very frequent (and painful) nipper especially if I was hurrying. Nothing could dissuade her. After realising that she was not understanding the 'No' command, I decided to try rewards. I had already taught her to 'Sit' so each time she would start chasing my legs I would turn and bellow a very loud 'Sit' which would take her by surprise and she would immediately obey with a very startled look on her face. I would then reward her for sitting. After doing this for a while the nipping completely ceased. Oh,Happy Days.
