Getting Ready for the CGC Test! - 08-11-2007, 12:53 AM

I know there's another thread, but it's about another dog, and I am so excited about this, I wanted to start my own.

Shippo is due to take the big test on the 19th! It's creeping up fast! We're practicing like crazy. I'm going to make him very tired before we go, and I really hope he does okay! If anyone has any advice to help the test go smoothly, I'm open!

Best of luck, Cheetah. I can't really offer suggestions, not having done anything even approaching this, but can you tell us what sort of prep you and Shippo have done?

Good luck I am taking Abby (my golden) sept 2nd for her CGC test and Obediance Nov A and Libby (my corgi) will be in her conformation class. So let me know how it goes. For me this will be my first time showing obediance and taking 2 dogs to a show. Oh I think I am in for it.

So I can only say what I am doing and that is practice practice and them some more practice and I am taking her every place I can think of that allows dogs. She just loves going to see my grandma at the nursing home. Now here is some good practice.

I have forgotten what a CGC Test is. Blow these Americans and their abbreviations of everything. If it is a knowledge test, Shippo will hose in. Whose more brainy? Rin Tin Tin - and he's dead. If it is a test of sight, sound and smell - who better than a Corgi who can see a coin size snowball from fifty metres. Maybe CGC is short for Come, Go, (stay) Cool. Max points for Shippo in the latter.
Anyway, looking forward to the result.

Canine Good Citizen... it's a test any breed, or mix of breeds, of dog can take to prove that he's well-behaved in public and reliably knows all basic commands (sit, stay, down, etc).

Lovely. That requires everything I have said and then some.

We have started a similar nation-wide programme here based on the American scheme - but it is so new that we have yet to shorten its title. Here it is for dogs over 12 months old ie gone past the puppy stages and maybe had attended puppy school. The training club I and Taylor belong to are going to be a lot busier, a bit richer and a lot more important because of the programme. The city's Mayor wants to bring his young dog along for lessons. The first intake of dogs and owners still to occur ( I think).

Michael - when and where is this happening? You may have said, but I might have missed it.
