Treats or Toys? - 11-17-2007, 08:44 AM

I've noticed during our training sessions that Charlie is much more eager to work for toys as a motivator than for treats. This is the case even first thing in the morning when he hasn't eaten since the previous evening. I think this is interesting since the majority of the dogs I've worked with have been much more food oriented.

I'd be interested in what motivates your dogs to work. Does your dog train better with toys or food treats (or something else)?

Duncan is pure corgi....food is his motivater. That's the only way I get him to do anything I want.

It's far cheaper to reward a dog with a toy (usually a tug toy or a tennis ball) as a treat for a deed well done, than that of a food treat. One is an ongoing, reusable reward and the other is a consumed reward.

Molsen & Miller are both motivated by food. Miller will not even come in from outside unless there is a cookie involved. Cheese is their favorite.

My last corgi was really motivated by toys. He would become bored with treats and hold out for something better. He was also a extremely picky eater, yes I know my fault! I try to use both toys and treats when training, but food treats were definitely the most effective motivator for them.

LOL I had forgotten about this post. Charlie was 5 months old when I originally posted. Now at 11-12 months, he has certainly grown into Mr. Will-Work-for-Food. What a difference! He does still like toys, but not for training lures so much anymore.
