From the top of my head - if Cody is not usually a barker - much like my Taylor - then he will respond to your requests for him to be quiet - because he is not a continuous barker in all kinds of circumstances so he is able to restrain himself. When Taylor puts up a barking performance I say sssshhh very loud and put my finger accross my mouth -just like you would to quieten a child. And it works very well - unless he is really really keyed up and it might mean something more physical such as if he is on a choker chain with a lead, to jerk the lead and say a firm NO so that he will snap out of it. And praise him when he does.

Linda,

I know some corgi owners who have taught their corgis to "whisper." Instead of the loud incessant carrying on, you get muffled woofs. That might be something try. Since he knows speak, then teaching for the "whisper" might come more easily. Also the "shhhhhh" works with some of them.

Deb,

how do you teach a "whisper"? I have tried the "shhhhh" along with "quiet",
but whenever we are at the vets and see those other dogs, whom he thinks
are all his friends, he just barks at them.

I know at times when I ask him to "speak", he sometimes does the high pitch
bark and sometimes the low pitch "woof"
