good luck....

We never did any formal training with Darci, but when Egan is around 6 months I think we will enroll both of them in class. We have a facility that does lessons ( they also show corgi's ) about an hour away, I think I will use them.

They also do a 2 week boarding/training session. It's a lot more expensive but we have a friend who sent his male corgi while they were out of town, my goodness it was remarkable he is so well behaved.

I could never do without my dogs for 2 weeks though, I dont think.

Hi Cindy:

Is that training classes very far from Elizabethton? I would like to enroll Chip in obedience but I am not sure about Petsmart. I am with you, I couldn't send Chip away for 2 weeks either. I think it would be fun for some training classes though.

Chips mom,
Knoxville would be about 1 hr and 40 minutes for you to drive.

I looked around in your area and didnt find too much you may try Asheville, NC for training classes it looks like it's about an hour away and offers more selection of trainers. Google dog obedience and the city and state.

Here are a few I found in your area.

Debbie I think may be kind of close to you she may know of some different places.

Linda - Corgis get on famously with Border Collies. Taylor hangs around with a mob of them at agility training. t's funny that they do because apart from both being farm workers, there is little else in common. But the Borders have very good natures and are very active and athletic - usually without being gushy or muscling in. These are probably the reasons why Corgis are so fond of them.

Ace Russell by chance? Nice fellow and you will be in good hands.

Chip's Mom, what I was able to learn at the picnic is that the closest freestyle type classes are in Asheville. The Greater Kingsport Kennel Club would be your best bet to look into classes. One of the out of state picnic goers who has been training and teaching classes for like 25 years observed classes at the new PetsMart and let's just say she wasn't impressed. I think there was mention of the friend with her having to use some pretty strong negative corrections to get her out of the store. So those classes didn't get a real high recommendation.

I am going to email Kingsport hopefully today for their fall training class. Thanks for the input. Do you know when the Corgi Aid picnic is in NC?

DUH! Had I looked more closely in your post where you gave the website I would have known. It is Ace and as I said nice guy. I think you'll have a lot of fun. He came to last year's picnic in TN and that was the first time I got to meet him in person, although I have worked with him on rescues several times over the years and felt like I knew him already. He gets a thumb's up.

I think it must depend on the trainer and each Petsmart. The one we are going to in Charleston has a great class. It is a 9 week class and each week we're given a sheet of instructions of 3/4 different commands that build and reinforce what we have learned the week b4. Our trainer Janet is wonderful - no negitive corrections, 1st the puppy learns with a treat and hand signal what is expected then the voice comand comes into play. Our 1st week the only command we were to teach our dog was to learn it's name by our using a treat and eye contact with the dog. We graduate next week.
