Leg Lifting - 06-20-2006, 10:27 AM

Today my pawsitively perfect Chip learned to lift his leg when he pees. He lifted it on the dining room chair and I scolded him and sent him outdoors, so he lifted it on the rocking chair on the deck (with my husband sitting in it) and then went to his Aunt Marilyn's and lifted it in the living room. He is 5 months old and been good about going outside to do his business. So now I am wondering if it is a hormone thing or what is going on. Any ideas? He is scheduled for his neuter on June 30th.

Chips mom,

It sounds cute, but I know, it is not cute - Not sure what to tell you, I did
not experiece that with Cody. When Cody goes outside, sometimes he
lifts his leg and sometimes he still pees while standing on all fours. Hopefully,
someone can give you advice on this one.

I hope someone tells you how to cure your pawsitively perfect Chip from lifting his leg on the furniture. But it gave me quite a laugh. He is probably showing you his new trick.

Yes, he is very proud of himself. My husband said if his foot had been an inch or so closer, he would have gotten wet. All for the love of a corgi. LOL

It is tough not to laugh at them sometimes, isn't it?

I've heard that dogs learn to lift their leg if they see another dog do it. But I don't agree with that anymore because little Fargo who is 4 months has been lifting his leg for awhile now while he goes potty. He's been around my parents' male golden but he doesn't lift his leg. I'm alright with him lifting his leg, but I definitely don't want him marking his territory on things. Luckily he hasn't tried yet. Is that something that is trainable? Or no?

I know this is probably gonna sound stupid but I thought the leg lift was a thing they just automatically did. I thought Pockets was just lazy because he never does. He may never since my other two are girls! Obviously no help since I am apparently lost having a boy!!

Chip did it once when we were on vacation, then a couple of weeks ago it did it again both times on a bush. Then the next time, he lifted his front leg, hilarious. He hasn't done it again since this morning's little bout so maybe it is out of his system. I have all females other than chip and they are spayed except for Maybelle.

Well - I think some of the problem is having 2 puppies in the house. Maybelle & Chip are too busy playing to tend to business and forget they are supposed to go outside. So Maybelle will be staying outside now when knowone is home and I am thinking about using a crate for her when she is inside at night. I am going to give Chip a second lesson in housebreaking too. When I took Maybelle to the vet, she said that Chip would not revert back in his housebreaking but he has and I am so worried. I feel so sorry for Maybelle. She is growing into a beautiful pup but still remains frightened of strangers. She whined at the gate when I left this morning.

I think Chip just had to go, and decided to show you his new trick. Just treat it as if he tinkled in the house - it is what they do to mark their territory so unless someone else pees there - it's his.
Rupe was hilarious the first time he lifted his leg - he had a look of awe on his face - like wow how'd I do that? For about two weeks he was so excited about doing it he flung his leg up so high he fell over. He still lifts his leg everyday - sometimes he get lazy and starts to and then does the masculine four legged pee pose.

I always thought they did it automatically, too. Jackie's "boyfriend" is the first make dog I have ever seen who does the 4-legged masculine pee. Jackie actually lifts one little paw when she squats. Not high, just an inch or to off the ground, but so cute.

These stories are adorable. Who would have thought that learning to pee would be so entertaining?

Duchess does that leg lift too. I think it is adorable and wondered if it is common in Corgis? She also marks every few minutes and more often when she is in territory recently visited by other dogs.
I believe some males take a long time to get the leg lift. So if any of those male dogs are young they may still get the hang of it even after they are a year old.

I read in some puppy book of mine, that most male dogs will be lifting their
leg by the time they are eight to twelve months old. Cody is 7 months and
lifts his about 1" off the ground, but not always, sometimes he just stands
there and goes.
