My corgi used to pee on pad but now has stopped - 07-04-2006, 06:07 PM

My 6 month old corgi was house trained. He was very consistent in using the pee pads. We started training him since he was 2 months old. He had accidents once in a while but held it well. Then, a month ago, we started taking him out to the streets and parks to pee and poop. Now, he would not pee on the pad at all. He even had a few accidents at home because we didn't take him out to the streets fast enough.

Is there a way that he knows it's ok to pee on the pad and on the streets so there would be no accidents? He runs away when he knows he had an accident. He tries very hard to wait for us to take him outside but sometimes we can't. How can we train him to use the pad again?

Thanks for the advice!

Is your pup on a schedule to pee, either going out, or on the pad? May I ask why he needs to use the pee pad?

By the way, your Corgi, Milo is quite cute. It sounds like at 5 months is when you first started taking him outdoors to go potty - I am curious as to why did you wait so long to introduce him to pottying outside? and what is the need for the pee pads now?

What a cute pup...............

Why not get rid of the pee pad and just go outside, it sounds like what he prefers.

Our vet suggested to have all his vaccinations and shots before he can go outside. So, we didn't take him out at all until he got all his shots. Now, after he got all his shots, we take him out. He really enjoys outside.

But, we live in NYC. We're prone to getting crazy weather such as really wet weather (like today's) and sometimes the really crazy snow/blizzard weather. We do not want him to go outside when it's drenching or when there's a blizzard.

I want our dog to be flexible. That's why we want him to use the pee pads. The pee pads are really good and he was good with them for a while. I have no problem taking him outside but there are times when it's raining cats and dogs. We DO NOT want him to get sick. That's my concern.

Any help?

Thanks!

SweetChee,

I live in Wisconsin, and the weather here can be wild during the winter. We got our Pem on January 28th, and we took him out in the back yard from day 1(he was 3 months old at the time) I think your vet meant it is best to keep him away from other dogs and areas where other dogs may pee and poop until your dog was fully vaccinated. My dog has been exposed to snow and rain - in fact, the rain does not phase him and I don't think they can get sick from getting wet. Cody would roll in the snow also - he loved it. In fact, they often prefer more cooler temps and the cold because of their coats.

Just the other day, we had lots of rain and I just put on my raincoat and away we went outside for him to potty - it doesn't bother him a bit. In fact, I am the one wishing he would hurry up so I can get back in. Fresh Air and the outdoors is very good for Corgis; any dog for that matter.

Hello:

I am originally from Northern NY (where it is 40 below for weeks and days on end) I now live in TN which is my home and I love it. Anyway, I had a corgi mix that I got when he was about 6 weeks old. The snow would get over 3 foot high in our yard and my husband kept a path shoveled in our yard for him all winter so he could go outdoors to do his business. He never got sick even when it was 40 below. I just could only take him out for a very short few minutes because I was afraid of him freezing his feet when it was that cold. Fortunately he knew what needed to be done and hurried back to the heat. Good luck with your pup.

Do you live in an apartment with no yard ?

I can understand you wanting him to be versatile with your weather restraints.

I agree with the above comments he's not going to get sick just by being out in the weather, just like going out into cold weather with a wet head wont make you sick, its an old wives tale.

Is he crate trained? that can also be a big help. It's not uncommon for young dogs to change their habits a bit.

Good Luck

Hi there! I live in Westchester County, NY, so I know what you mean about the weather we have had recently!!! But we brought Jackie home last September, at the tender age of 8 weeks, and she has been going outside since day 1 also. She balked a little at the rain, at first, but now it doesn't seem to faze her at all (although she does "get down to business" a little more quickly!). I understand wanting to protect your little baby (I am notorious for being an overprotective mom), but he will be fine walking outside in the rain and the snow. In fact, he will probably LOVE the snow . . . I haven't heard of a corgi yet who doesn't, including my fluffy princess (who just turned 1 year old on July 1st, btw!!). You have gotten excellent advice and support above in response to your question. But if I can ever help with the "local" stuff, please feel free to send me a Private Message anytime!

ps - I agree with Linda - Milo is precious!!!

I agee with getting rid of the pee pads and only taking Milo outside. My dogs aren't fond of the rain, but we live on the west coast and it is wet here for our winter, they get used to it. We don't get much snow, but when we do, they have a ball! Nothing like seeing those furry red bodies leaping into the snow drifts.

I do think that it is natural for dogs to want to do their business away from where the live and eat. I made it a point to let my dogs relieve themselves on different surfaces too. Sand, dirt, gravel, rocks etc, not just grass. That way, when we travel, they are willing to go where ever there is an opportunity.

Does your pup 'go on command' yet? With your special word?

THANK YOU ALL FOR THE GREAT ADVICE!

I'm very protective of him. We do have a yard but we prefer to walk him out a bit so he can stretch and relax a bit. There have been occasions that makes it hard for us to take him out such as when I'm sick.

I'm really afraid of the weather hurting me. Yes, see my protective side? But, I will try our best. I really do want him to be more versatile.

This forum is really great because I wanted corgi owners to give me their advice. I know corgis aren't pugs or retrievers (they are widely around) but I think they are so special!

There are many, many dogs in NYC and they do fine with whatever the weather throws at them. The climate in Wales was not by any means a year round ambient temperature of 70. Corgis are not little marshmallow fluff fragile lap toys - inside of them still is the tough spirited working dog that could take on cattle and win. Their double coats protected them from the harsh climate of Wales and it works equally well in NYC. What would be of concern during the winter months is the salt and chemicals that might be used to help clear snow as that can be harsh on their pads. That, however is true in any part of the US that has snow.

The convenience element seems to be more for the humans. Instead of the pee pads, you may want to look into a litter box system for him.

Debbie
