How often does your corgi use the potty? -
07-31-2006, 10:43 AM
I'm just wondering how often does my 6 month old or your corgi need to use the potty? He drinks a lot of water and he usually needs to go pee more than go poop. And when he pees, he pees a lot. He usually needs to go around at least 2 times a day or maybe even 3 times a day. Sometimes even more. If he can't hold it, he pees on the floor which I have to frequently mop. Then he hides because he knows he did something bad.
How often does a corgi need to go pee and poop? How about an adult corgi? It rained the other day and he wouldn't pee at all so I had to take him back inside. Now, I wish he would start using his puppy pee pads again. Sigh...

SweetlyChee,
I know there is a "rule of thumb" in regards to how long a corgi should be able to hold his/her bladder based on age, but each dog is different and that will be based also on activity level and amount of water they are consuming.
If you only take your dog out 2 to 3 times a day at 6 months of age to pee, I personally do not think that is enough times especially since you mention that he has been drinking a lot of water and naturally he would pee in the house so this is not his fault because "he really has to go". In regards to going poop, some dogs go 2 times a day and others maybe 4, again ,depends on how many times a day they are fed and activity level also.
I am home full time so Cody who is 8 months old goes out probably every 3 hours for pee during the daytime hours. At night, he is in his crate all night. Now, I know he could probably hold it longer, but as long as I am here, I give him the opportunity to relieve himself, plus sometimes he drinks lots of water due to hot weather or us playing inside.
I am not sure what the answer in in regards to getting your dog to go on the wet grass, but I take Cody out even if it is wet and he goes. Personally, if I were you, I wouldn't resort to trying to go back to pee pads to get your dog to go, but rather encourge him to go on rainy days - maybe walking him a further distance rather than just stepping out on the wet grass.
What is your schedule with him ?- what time does he awake in the morning and what time does he retire for the evening?. I am not sure what Your schedule is and if you are referring to his being let out only 2 to 3 times during the week(when you are at work), or is this his weekend schedule?
Linda

Pockets who is just over 5 months. He goes out at LEAST 5 or 6 times a day and 2 or 3 times at night and I am still having problems with him wetting in his kennel. He lets me know after he goes but has not realized to let me know before. He is starting to wake me up at night but still not letting me know during the day. Which I know I am gonna get yelled at by Michael again...I know he doesn't WANT to pee in his kennel.....but we have not found that magic way to communicate to each other. It is a work in progress and we are trying to be very patient with each other!

Chip goes out in the middle of the night and also several times a day and goes potty. When it rains, he doesn't want to go outdoors and has had a few accidents on an old rug by the door. I think he believes he is made of sugar and will melt if he gets wet when it rains. I take a handful of treats and coax him from the deck to the yard and he will potty on the sidewalk and run back in the house. When it is raining, he has been known to poop on the deck. Sometimes, he gives me that pathetic look he has like "don't make me go out in that nasty stuff" I am hoping he will outgrow it. But anyway, I would say a six month old pup needs to go out more than 2 or 3 times a day at least Chip does. I wonder what the average age a corgi pup should be completely housebroken.

He has no water after 8 and I take him out for the last time at 11. It seems to be between 6 and 9 am BUT we are up for the day and I am usually right there close. Today he was out and peed then 30 minutes later he peed in his kennel. (He won't lay down outside his kennel and he was in there to rest after running) Nothing has changed with the schedule. I am not sure. like I said he peed 30 minutes prior today. Patience is a virtue!

I take Dudley (5 1/2 months) out at least 5 times a day. Once starting at about 6:30 and the last time at around 11pm, depending on how late I'm up. He's gotten pretty good about letting me know when he needs to go. I agree that only two or three times a day is not near enough. My philosophy, especially with pups, is the more options you give them to go outside, the better.
That's kind of funny that he won't go out in the rain. Dudley is quite the opposite...I can't get him to come back inside when it rains! He loves it, and I end up getting a shower and a wet, stinky dog!

When they get past the puppy stage, most Corgis don't need a lot of toileting during a 24 hour day. I can safely use this routine for Taylor
( though he usually gets out more often and earlier): Out in the morning by 10.30am, out in the afternoon by five pm, out at night by midnight.
Now all this is dependent on how much play and chase a Corgi is given in an inside environemnt and how much water is consumed during the course of a day.

I usually take the girls out about every 3/4 hours and also after a rowdy play time. Emma could wait longer but Chloe is still a work in progress. Sometimes I miss her signal... Emma gives me a woof but Chloe just walks to the door and waits.

All your stories are so wonderful! I really enjoy reading about them. Maybe I have to re-think this and take my corgi (Milo) out more often. My dog definitely is hesitant when it comes to raining so he won't usually go.
I do want to limit water after 8 pm but he always goes to the bowl looking for water. One time we didn't have water in the bowl and he peed in the bowl instead. Has this ever happened to anyone?
Also, at what age does he start lifting their leg up? My Milo still haven't lift his leg up so he pees all over his feet.

I have read that usually by the time they are a year old, they will be lifting
their leg - Cody started off and on at around 4 months. Once in awhile he would do it and then not. At 8 months now, he does it all the time. If you
want to limit the water to no drinking after 8 p.m. then you need to make sure the evening is "quiet time" for him - snuggling, petting, etc. If you are going to be rough housing and throwing a ball, etc, he is naturally going to
be thirsty; but yes, you should increase his trips outside to more than 3 times
a day; that is just not enough for a 6 month old - can't be fun for him to have
to try and hold his bladder that long and then have an accident and feel bad
about it.

Milo is such a contrast. He very nicely directed his weeing into an empty bowl - what a show-off! Not a usual thing to do at all - a large toilet tray , yes but a bowl???? Then you say he tends to wee at times over his feet - this is something he shouldn't do more than on a very few occasions indeed. Corgis have a wonderful 'hidden' way of avoiding their urine or poos with some deft four feet co-ordinated hopity-skipity.
He will lift a leg to wee at any given time over four months old. Usually by the time they are seven months it's a done deal for Corgi males. Some breeds of dogs take much longer because they mature slower- such as the big breeds.
Yep, no late night drinks for puppies unless you take them out for a late night toilet after their last drink.
