Chip & The Tunnel - 08-17-2006, 06:34 PM

Tonight in obedience class, the instructor started the agility tunnel. The first time was very short and Chip went right through - each time she increased the length, Chip ran faster. The last time, he flew. He loves the tunnel so I am going to buy him one Any recommendations for a backyard playground for Chip. Next week, she is going to add a little pole for jumping - Chip is not a jumper so we will see how that goes. We had a great time anyway.

Taylor love tunneling too. He goes very quick through them. I never thought he would get through a colapsable tunnel - but he sure proved me wrong.
All Corgis jump- so it's just a bit of practice. If he goes up and down stairs with ease, he'll be into jumping in any case. Find something he HAS to jump and he'll do it- such as a low hedge or a low fence with no room to sneak under.

Chips mom,

we did the pole jumping a couple of weeks ago in class. The trainer used a treat on the other side to initially get the dogs to jump over. Cody did jump, but a couple of the big dogs just walked over ever so slowly.

Glad to hear you two are enjoying your class! Dudley loved the tunnel as well and you'll be surprised at how well those stubby little legs can make it over the pole

Way cool! Tunnels do seem to be a favorite of many corgis. As for suggestions for Chip's backyard playground - Toys R Us and Target are two sources a lot of the performance people use to find a lot of items for their corgis playgrounds.

Walking in a park one day, Duchess and I came to a large tree that had fallen accross the path. I got over it easily enough but I wanted to see how Duchess would handle the situation. Would she find her way around the ends of the tree? She promptly jumped over to my amazement. So I guess it is true that corgis are natural jumpers like Michael said.

Abby was doing well in Agility except for the tunnel, she was always a bit nervous about it. A few weeks ago it rolled a bit while she was in it, and now she will not go near any of the agility equipment at all. She baulks at even going near the area. I am just walking her near the equipment now without using it, and praising her, but she keeps pulling back. Any suggestions ???

KatC - It is a matter oif building up Abbys confidence again. Start with the most simplest exercise - as though you and her are just starting out again with agility training, and then eventually its back to tunnels. Perhaps you can try this: go through human tunnels - road and pedestrian tunnels - with her, and at speed, using the calls you give her.
I have to get Taylor to overcome his fear of seesawing. We have had few sessions with it and we need to master it so Taylor can go for his first title ( in NZ it's termed AD). But many , many rookie dogs do have mishaps with obstacles and they come back and nail them. Taylor had initial difficulty with the A-frame. The A-frame in NZ for mini dogs is the same as for the big dogs.
And at one stage he refused to go up it. But I just needed to regain his confidence, give him lots of encouragement and rewards, and his determination did the rest.
Place Abby back in the beginners class at the training club you and her attend. Go back to basic obedience things like sit and stay and come.

Chip successfully jumped up on the sofa twice yesterday. Usually he puts his front paws up and waits for me to lift him up. It amazes me the power that is in those little legs. He also has started doing the yoyo thing. Our side entrance door has a window in the top half so Maybelle will put her feet up and look out the window when we come home beside her is our little corgi yoyo jumping up like a yo yo. First you see him and then you don't. It is so funny. He is too short to stand and look out the window. I thought about a box there but I am afraid he would fall.

Cody jumps up on the sofa also and can also jump up on the beds, I don't like the bed thing - I just think it is too high and I always help him down. maybe I am just worrying, but I don't know if that could hurt his back.

Linda - you are over anxious. and over-protective. Corgis are tough cookeis - they are not delicate toy dogs. Treat them with kids gloves and they won't develop to their full potential.
