We've been avoiding the Texas summer heat by hanging out in Colorado for the last few weeks. We were at 5-6,000' for a couple of weeks (on the 'Front Range' or Eastern side of the Rockies) and everything was fine and normal. Then we headed West and stayed for a few days at 11 Mile State Park at 9,000' of elevation.

Sassy was fine when we first arrived at the park, then all of a sudden (a couple of hours later) she became extremely lethargic, wouldn't eat (that was a major clue something was wrong!!) and at 3 AM she vomited in her crate.

We were pretty frantic as you might imagine. We called a nearby vet the next morning (we're way out in the country with very limited choices) who said he would call back later since he had to make some horse house calls (he never did call back.)

We knew humans could get altitude sickness and I started to suspect Sassy had altitude sickness. I did some Internet research and sure enough, she exhibited all of the classic symptoms. She slowly returned to normal behavior - it took about three days before we thought she was back to her old hungry self :wiggle:

Since then, we have taken Sassy with us when we went 4-wheeling in the San Juan Mountains and she did just fine at over 12,000' of elevation - in fact she loved getting out and playing in the streams when we stopped for a break.

Now I'm wondering what will happen with Sassy when we return home back to our usual 2200' of elevation for a few months and then go back up in altitude (we are planning on returning next summer.) Maybe she won't get sick again, or maybe we have to go through this cycle again. There is a drug available that some vets use (I think it helps oxygenates the blood or something like that) off-label, so we should probably discuss it before we head to altitude again.

Hello All,

I've spent some time searching through the archives and have not been able to find any answers so I thought I post here looking for some help.

Our almost 3 year old Welsh Pembroke has always had sensitive skin. He would get hot spots a lot but they always reacted well to topical antihistamine sprays.

Recently, the number of "hot spots" increased. They became bigger and some led to loss of fur. They are mostly dry and the color ranges from red to a dark brown. We just noticed that there seems to be a slight order coming from his skin as well.

Today was his 3rd trip to the vet on this issue and they have no idea what the problem is. He has had a full course of antibiotics and today an injection of Ivomec. They are also doing blood tests. One thing the vet said is his skin is "too pink."

There are no visible signs of scabies, fleas or tics. We have only been using vet recommended ultra gentle shampoos for months. His mood, energy, appetite and bowels all seem good. We have been feeding him the same food since he graduated to adult food, Eukanuba Adult Maint. Small Bite.

The only change to his diet was the integration of 1/2 cup of no salt added canned green beans along with his kibble about 3 months ago. I can't imagine this could be the issue, but stranger things have happened.

Any thoughts, ideas or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Pic of Jasper included for eye candy :tired:

Thanks!

Joe

We just rescued a corgi from a kill shelter near our area. She is about 9 months or so. She was covered with ticks and had kennel cough. She is on antibiotics for both. We have spent alot money to get her the medical attention and shots she needs. When we saw her we noticed she limps, her left front leg is weak. The shelter said she had a small cut on her paw but we have seen no evidence of that and neither did our vet. We took her anyways because that was a bad place for such a cute dog.

Anyways, she tested neg for lyme, but we did the meds for it anyways. I have read many post about leg problems. I think it maybe an old injury, she was abandoned. I am hoping maybe the ticks caused the problem and the meds will help.

My question is... When I mess with her leg there is no pain for her. She doesn't whine, flinch or anything. As the day progresses she limps more but yet there is no pain. It simply makes no sense.
Is it possible for the dog to have developed a habit from an old injury and she hasn't built up muscles in that leg? It's almost as if it is numb and gets weak as the day goes on. Any ideas as to why she wouldn't have pain?

She is a precious dog and we have really taken to her. Only had her a week.
Thanks

so a number if you lovely people who have been helping me may know i got a pup about a week ago and i have been asking questions -etc.

today was our first vet trip, again as some of you know we dont know for sure what shots he has had so we told the vet the whole story and he used his best judgement and gave him a couple shots and a pill, also we got a quick check up and he said he looks totally healthy and all that jazz and he weighed him and he weighs 11 pounds now so he has gained a bit of weight (or weighs more than we thought) which is good. the vet also agrees with the age we were told (right around 4 months old) so yeah. i feel much less paranoid. and we have another appointment for next month and he should be all caught up shot wise.

NOW heres my question - since the vet visit riley has been very.. sleepy or possibly depressed or something.. he has been a ball of fire since day 1 until today. he has been moping and sleeping/laying and NOT playing at all. his tail has been down too. is this common after shots? some sort of side effect? im guessing tomorrow he will more or less be back to normal but i thought i should ask.

thanks to everyone who has answered my questions or helped me out at all. really appreciate it!

I made an account on here because I really don't know where else to turn. I am hoping someone on here might have an answer.

Our Corgi is about 3 years old and over a year's time her walking has become so terrible it breaks my heart. It is almost like she has flippers instead of paws. Instead of standing on her toes like a regular dog her feet are bent so she is walking on her ankles. when she walks her feet just kinda flip with little or no control. We have gone to several vets and none of them have had an answer. They did give us pain meds for her but I want to fix the problem not drug her. Although I do know it is hurting her. She went from the most vibrant dog running and playing all the time to a very grumpy dog who hates going outside. It started in her front right paw then her front left paw and then both of her back legs. She is almost belly to the ground when she walks and of course not walking has equaled weight gain. She won't let anyone get near her paws and if you put extra weight on her when petting her she yipes. Other possibly helpful information She was not overweight when the problem started. Might be a coincidence but it started when I stopped taking her for normal walks and the dog park because I myself was injured and unable to walk for a year. She came from a pet store and the parents had no known problems according to the store. One vet suggested lymes disease but we had her tested and it came out negative. No abuse or leg trauma.

I ran into a lady with a Corgi who said her dog had a similar problem and her vet told her it was something he had seen in a Daschund once and it was because he was not getting enough exercise. The muscle could no longer support the foot hence the walking on the ankle. He told her to give him Glucosamine and make him work out more and more each day. She said it helped her Corgi (who was a rescue and she thought they were going to have to put him down) and he now walks six miles every day with no leg problems anymore. I want to know if anyone has ever heard of this or seen it. I am so sad for my dog and I am afraid if I work out with her it will make it worse not better. We have a pool so I take her swimming for 20 minutes a day and have been doing so for a month with no noticeable change. Has anyone seen this and know what to do or if I am going in the right direction? There are two pics but if you need more or from a different angle please let me know and I will take them. Thank you so much.
**UPDATE: I don't know why but every time I post a reply on here it does not show up! Thank you so much everyone for your help. I can not afford a specialist right now but I am going to try the pool and diet change. Thank you for giving this thing she is having a name since writing this post I've spent every free moment on the internet researching everything I can. We've been doing the pool every day now an I am taking pictures once a week to see if there are any changes. Once she gets a little stronger and less fat I am going to start walking her as much as she can tolerate. Why would swimming not help her pasterns? Again, thank you SO much everyone!

I just adopted a 3.5 year old purebred corgi, Coco. She was the most calm out of her siblings and did not bark at the time we met. She is scared and dislikes sudden movement; if it occurs then she will flinch. Coco has been drinking water but other than that she has not approached me or my friends. When I put her on the leash she doesn't want to walk or move.

I am guessing she is trying to adjust still but is there anything I should do? I just emailed the owner to ask more about things Coco likes and is familiar with to get her to feel more comfortable in her new environment.
