Just a couple of items you may like......
If any of you ever go by a Love's truck stop in your travels, check out the dog figurines in their knick-knack section. They have a Corgi one and it is the cutest figurine of a Corgi I have ever seen. (It also has 22kt gold on it) This Corgi is so cute and comical looking, with huge ears. Also, if you have never heard of Big Dogs clothing(they also have knick-knacks), then you should check that out as well. My husband and I have so many of the shirts. My favorite is "I love my big dog, and my big dog loves me!" It's also a play on words since Gambler is so short for a dog. Just thought that I would share.
Take care, and love your Corgi! |

Chip's Mom is correct about Big Dogs, and Love's is a national chain, they should have a site that would show if there are any near you. I always stop there when driving back and forth to Las Vegas. It has everything, and while stretching my legs I always look at the knik-knacks, which drives my husband crazy! Big Dogs has the best dog items that I have found, great quality, from clothing to toys.

I'll have to check out the Love's on my way to Fresno the next time I go down to see my sister. For a truck stop, it's pretty neat. My dad got me a jacket w/ my favorite football team's logo, and you know what, this thing is the best jacket ever. I'll keep my eye out for the corgi stuff...ooh..speaking of totally cute...our local Feed Barn (Martell, CA) has a red/white corgi cookie jar. Isn't that just perfect!?! Maybe I'll ask for that for Christmas.

One more item(and a short story, sorry): Two months before Miss Gambler was shipped to us, my husband and I were driving through Death Valley, almost halfway through, when a truck-who never stopped-ran us out of our lane. We rolled over on the highway, then flipped end over end, twice, on the dry and dusty desert floor. The highway patrolman ran up with bags to cover our bodies when he arrived. He had assumed that we would be dead. We were the only vehicle involved, so no one else hurt, but I will always get the chills when I think of what would have happened had Miss Gambler been shipped two months earlier. We invested in a really big doggy bed for the middle seat(big seat, SUV)and it straps her into the seat through the seatbelt so she will never fly around in an accident, yet she retains her movement within the bed. One added benefit is that it is so high that she is level with her window(with it's winnie the pooh shade) even when slumbering, and she gets the total view out the front windshield. She LOVES her bed! If anyone ever has questions about traveling with a dog, I am the person to ask! I have made it an art form and enjoyable for all.

wow that is so scarey! Glad that you were ok, that sounds like a horrible crash. I too travel with both my corgi , dillon, and my eldest cat Misty, who is diabetic and insulin dependent, so when we go to NC every month or so, she must come as I trust no one to be able to care for her very special needs ( including twice daily blood tests- ear prick, no biggie to her and twice daily insulin injections) so we all go together. We have a special Hammock style back seat cover for the SUV that makes it impossible for anyone to fly forward onto the floor, and goes high enough that in a quick stop, Dillon would only go into the other side of the seat cover and into the back of the front seats. We put in his bed (not crate) so he is really comfortable and Misty rides in a hard crate that is actually Dillon's (old hard crate, he now uses a soft crate for sleeping at night). Everyone is packed so nice and snug, they cant go anywhere! The biggest challenge i have is that i travel with a vial of insulin for the cat, and i have to keep it cold but not freeze it - and maintain that temp for about 9-10 hours! That has been a trick...i right now put the vial in paper towel and the into a small tupperware bowl and then into an insulated lunch bag with two of the blue gel ice packs... It is always a risk as insulin is fragile...no knocking it around, no freezing it and no allowing it to stay at room temp. So if anyone has any ideas, i am listening!

I do have a suggestion: my husband and I like to travel in comfort, and I have done this for many years for work(lived in too many states!), that we have a small car refrigerator, just plugs into the car for power and you can put drinks, water, etc... it was about $45 and there are different styles and sizes. It's really compact and has a handle. Hope this helps.

Is it really big? about how big is it? like a lunch box? smaller? bigger? and where did you find this? I would love to find one , that would be a great thing for us on our road trips..and it would make the insulin last a little longer!

Wow MGM! You are full of handy tips!!!
Do you have a pic of Miss Gambler's car bed? It sounds comfy! I have the hammock, like Emilie. It works great, but I'm always on the lookout for something better. And what a scary story. So glad no one was hurt! Nikki (Corgis'R4me) has a similar story, but with a much sadder ending. She lost her Sunshine kitty in an accident like yours. Very sad & scary. ![]() PS(Emilie) - you don't travel light, do you? Must be quite an operation getting everyone packed & ready to go.

Fluffy Pants: When you used my initials I thought that it was quite ironic that MGM happens to be one of my favorite casinos in Las Vegas. We have a lot of fun there.
As for the refrigerator, there are different sizes and ours is big enough to hold drinks or something else small that we may buy that needs to be kept cold, definately larger than a shoe box but small enough that it sits on the floorboard. They tend to work best if nearly full. Try several places before purchasing so you can compare but start with the basic stores such as Target, Wal-Mart, Bed, Bath and Beyond(where we purchased ours), etc... you will have no problem finding this I have seen them all over the place. As for the car bed, I will take a couple of photos and post them. Note that it has a cloth cover that completely removes and can be washed, really nice, and that there are drawers for storage space that are hid by the cover. The liner is sheepskin(washable) and very cozy. I have never seen this in Petco, but try cutsey Mom and Pop pet boutiques that have those pampering items that Corgis deserve. The boutique where I purchased the bed is the same place where I purchased Miss Gambler's pink stroller. My husband says the owner smiled as bright as a Christmas tree the last time we went in! Thanks for the info Miss Gambler's Mommy, I will look for the electric fridge, what a great invention!.
Jessica, packing is actually easy now, we have clothes and toys and supplies and food already in NC for us and the animals ( we have a second property there where we stay when hubby is doing business down there -gearing up to open an office down there) so we go down there once a month or month and a half for a few days ( yep, we drive 9 1/2 hours, stay two days and drive home, crazy for sure!) Now we are at the point when it is time to go, we set up that back seat for the two traveling animals ( the other two cats stay home and my sister comes to check on them once while we are away) and grab some sodas for the road, insulin for the kitty and awayyyy we go. We have it down to a science now so there is no long packing process. In the begining this was a nightmere, so we are thankful we have finally gotten set up to do this easily and Dillon is a great traveler and misty is not happy with the ride but loves the other place so it works out in the end. Eventually we will be moving down there, but that could be a few more years yet...until then, we are a traveling family! Emilie |
