I'd be curious as to this breeder - Rupe came from a hobby breeder in Indiana fairly close to Kentucky. He cost more than $400 though.

Dewey - we hope you don't feel you are being criticized here - we are concerned for you and the pup and have your best interests at heart.

Sorry for the long update. I haven't gotten a chance to read any replies yet. I got pictures of Dewey's parents and I'm a little concerned! They don't look like purebred corgis to me at all. The mom looks way too tall and the dad looks... odd. Maybe I'm just being difficult? Help!

I am not an expert, but the dad looks questionable to me(but then again, his ears are not up) am I the only one that thinks that?
And the moms ears (inside) almost look like they have some type of rash or something?(maybe I am seeing things)

Dewey, you said you got pictures, but have you talked to her over the phone? Are these two dogs registered with the AKC? -

Have you had time to read what everyone has posted ?

And Deb is right, we aren't trying to criticize you here, we are just a bit suspicious of your situation since you yourself mentioned very early on that you were concerned that Aaron might let you down and that you may be scammed.

Jeez, Those dogs look like skin and bones to me. THe skin seems to be hanging off of your puppies mom. I would cut your losses. Things just don't look right. The dad looks awfully young. Just because you think you are getting AKC registered dogs doesn't mean you actually are. The AKC never shows up at your door to confirm, ya know? They work on the honor system. This may be a not be a puppy mill case, but it doesn't look that much better. Sorry Dewey, I know that's not what you want to hear, I wouldn't either especially when you have already gotten so excited. But, if you can, maybe try to get out of the deal.

Good Grief maybe I am imagining things but both of those dogs look like they are underfed to me. Poor little things. I would definitely look into this more before I bought a pup.

I thought the same thing, the dad looks like a pup himself and they are skinny and they just don't look vibrant nor healthy to me - I say the same thing, look elsewhere, closer to home(like I mentioned, 13 breeders in VA) on that link, Deal with someone you can MEET IN PERSON, and see how they run their breeding program and someone who is willing to speak with you when you need to ask questions. Just my 2 cents.

I know you put $50 down, but this dog may end up costing you way more in the end.

Just read all of the replies.

I am not offended by any of these questions. If I was, I could simply leave and never come back. Jespah said it best: you all are concerned for me and my pup and you only want the best. So do I.

...

Dewey is scheduled to arrive in Virginia (where I live) on November 17th. So far I have not spent a single cent to reserve and/or buy him. I've only picked up dog toys and bowls; I just couldn't help myself.

I'm going through Aaron because he seems to know breeders. I want the opinion of an 'expert' on this situation and the way he talks with the other dog lovers at works I figured he the guy I can trust.

Two days ago Anne told me I can find a corgi in Virginia for $250. I figured there were breeders here - corgimom gave me a list - but since Aaron secured Dewey for me, I feel compelled to buy him. I've seen his pictures, I know his face - I named him already. I don't want to just forget that because I found a cheaper dog.

I can buy one of Anne's dogs right away if I wanted to but I trust Aaron and I trust his faith in his breeder.

I have one huge concern now though. I have pictures of Dewey's parents and I don't know if they are pure bred or not. Aaron insists they are but I am not convinced. I don't really know what to look for. The mother looks like a mix of something (Aaron said they look different after having babies) and the dad looks scrawny (Aaron said the breeder keeps them that size cause the extra weight isn't healthy).

I requested side views of both the mother and the father.

Dewey, are you looking for a Corgi at a cheap price, or one that has the best chance of a healthy start in life? If you can get a Corgi for $250 you can almost guarantee that the necessary tests that should be done on the parents of your puppy were never done. You are buying a living, breathing animal from someone you have never spoken to.

Seems like you trust Aaron, but still, why are you not speaking to the breeder yourself? Is there some reason that he does not want to give you her phone number? There is a difference of keeping a dog at a healthy weight versus being underweight.

Just know what you are getting into because you are responsible for this puppies health, well being and vet bills for the next 12 to 15 years; not Aaron.

Okay -- so now I've read the replies in response to pictures of the parents. I was on the phone with Aaron when he sent me the pictures and I expressed my concern. He got a bit offended but - and I dont want to sound rude - I didn't care. The dogs didn't look 'right' to me and I came here first thing to post the pictures to see what you guys had to say. I literally I just got off the phone with him to post these pictures.

Guys, thanks for all your help. When Aaron calls me back (He's calling the breeder to get the side view pics of the parents), I will tell him to cancel the deal; it's just not working.

I don't think I made a mistake at all - neither did Aaron. I trusted him just like he trusted this breeder.

I want a healthy dog, yes, but if I can get a good deal in the process why not? The breeder thinks Aaron is getting the dog. Because they are friends she is dropping the price down by $600 for him.

But now that the deal is off I owe Aaron $50. A waste (I could have paid my cell phone bill, meh) but it's nothing compared to the $400 I could have spent.

I am sending out emails to all of the breeders in my area right now. I feel so bad that I have to turn down the dog I have already named... I wonder what is going to happen to him...

So emails have been sent out, hope people actually reply this time. Can't say that I'm not a little saddened at the moment. Dewey wouldn't be mine for a few more weeks but now I don't have him to look forward to and now I feel bad because I don't know what's going to happen to him or his parents.

:: sigh :: I'll update once I get replies. Some of these breeders live pretty far from me but I'm willing to take the time to get to them just for my doggy...

Dewey,

Sometimes Cheap prices/good deals doesn't mean quality - one piece of advice - in your next search for your pup - when talking with breeders that may contact you, ask what tests they did on the parents of the pups regarding their eyes, hips(what the OFA rating was) and vWD.
