Getting Dewey - 10-14-2006, 11:15 PM

I decided to create this online journal to chronicle the events leading up to the arrival of my first dog Dewey. This whole process is very new to me and I feel like I need someone to hold my hand through all of it. I trust you guys to offer the best, friendly advice. If you keep up with this journal please let me know if I should go about something a different way. If you see that I'm spending too much money or if I'm being a little bit unreasonable ^_^; let me know. I'm eager to do the right thing.

------

Dewey is three weeks old and is one of five males. I believe, though I'm not quite sure, he lives in Indiana right now. I live in Virginia. The breeder charging me $400.00, shipping included. I've spent $50 as a deposit to 'reserve' Dewey so now I only have $350 left to spend. In the beginning I expected to pay $800 and so did everyone else I talked to.

------

October 15th, 2006:
Received a reply email from my friend "Aaron", my friend with the all of the breeder contacts. I asked for him to get pictures of Dewey's parents. He said he was busy with his own things and that he would try to contact the breeder when he coulld. I thought this was odd since it takes but a few seconds to send an email. I would do it myself if I know how to contact them.

Later on I went to work to pick up some cat food and cat toys and I couldn't help but check out the dog toys and leashes. I never really looked at those sections before but now I had to stop myself from buying things..!

Today is not pretty eventful. If you all need more information, let me know! My biggests concerns are getting scammed and having Aaron let me down.

Good price for a pure bred Corgi in the USA. But it won't be your only initial costs. There will be at least one visit to the vet for vaccination/s pretty soon after bringing Dewy home. Check with the breeder regarding his vaccination programme then check with a vet by phone regarding what's required at the early stages, and compare notes.

Dewey,

I am a bit confused about what you said regarding that you are concerned you may be "scammed and Aaron letting you down"

Is your friend Aaron the person doing all the communicating with the breeder regarding your pup? There is no way if I were getting a pup(which is YOUR lifetime responsibility, not Aarons) would I have someone else talking with the breeder and arranging everything for me. Not to mention your money also. You are the one that should be talking with this breeder - If Aaron is, he certainly knows this persons phone number or email and should give it to you. There should be many questions you are asking the breeder; what are the health guarantees? Tell him that you would like to contact the breeder yourself because you have questions of your own that you want to know answers to.

You say the $400 includes shipping(what type of shipping?) I am assuming air fare also? A low price pet does not necessarily mean a quality pet in regards to health. Do you know if the parents of your pup had their eyes, and hips checked and were checked for vWD? And if she says yes, don't just take her word for that, ask her to provide the documentation showing that. You should be the one contacting the breeder directly; and the breeder should be able to email you pictures of the parents.

I couldn't agree with you more linda! I would be very wary - just because the dog is a low price does not mean it is a "good deal". I would be talking directly to the breeder as well, asking the appropriate questions. Are the parents both AKC regsitered corgi's with health guaranteesand have the parents been screened for genetic problems before they were bred? An inexpensive initial investment often means a very expensive (Vet bills) lifetime investment. I would not give anyone another cent until you have spoken to the breeder directly. The whole situation makes me a bit leary.

Dewey, listen to what is being told to you by the members here. Something doesn't quite sound right, and you absolutely need to contact the breeder and ask the appropriate questions. You do not want to fall in love with an unhealthy puppy, and the pups health is the question you need to feel comfortable before you get the pup. I know it all sounds so exciting-first dog and all but use your head and not your heart and do your homework!!!! Remember there are other breeders and corgis out there. Go online and reseach Pembroke Corgi breeders and do some searchs on this site about breeders and get educated if this breeder sounds suspect.

Something doesn't sound right. $400 including shipping. Airfare should be a good size chunk of that. Never heard of a corgi that cheap including airfare and crate for shipping.

As the saying goes: there are plenty of fish in the sea. You can pay top dollars and still get a dud. Where it does pay is to 'shop' around. There is no greater depth of Corgis anywhere in the world than there is in the USA - and the USA covers all the spectrums - from puppy mills where Corgis are almost entirely caged every day for 24 hours and the females expected to produce one litter after another, to the very best of Corgi breeding kennels found anywhere in the world where the breeders are estatic at imparting advice and information where they give you these all embracing contracts and guarantees to cover any eventualities. If I was you, I would go for broke ie at least to a level approaching the very best kennels and don't mind the wait even if it takes a couple of years - and in North America where Canada is also an important country for well bred Corgis - it is unlikely you need wait anywhere near that length of time. I could find great Corgi pups with my eyes closed - there is no need for you to even shut your eyes.

I am curious as to why you couldn't locate a corgi yourself and talk with the breeder. If you have internet, you can find a corgi much closer to home? I would not want to hand out money for a pup when I hadn't even talked to the breeder or gotten references or found out any kind of background on her breeding facilities, testing, etc. A good breeder is more than willing to send you pictures of her dogs, facilities, etc. I had my pictures the same evening I called my breeder.

Dewey, I just read your other thread "A sign from above" and you do mention that "through your friend", you are asking the necessary questions regarding the dog.

And actually Dewey you said also in that thread that when you intially were inquiring about getting a Corgi you realized(at that time) that you were not able to care for a dog.You said that was several months ago, but actually it was only a little over a month ago when you first inquired about getting a Corgi.

Is there a reason why you have not called or emailed the breeder directly? - calling would be my first choice. I would think after your friend, Aaron, made the initial contact , he would be more than happy to give you her name, address, phone number and email so you could take over from here; and if he doesn't want to give you that information, well,
something would not sit right with me. There should be nothing to hide.

You also mentioned that Aaron spoke to two different breeders and chose "this one for you" - do you know why he chose one over the other? and why is he choosing the breeder for you?

You really should talk to her yourself

I don't want to beat the dead horse, but this sounds off to me too. The breeder should WANT to talk to you directly. I think you are right to be wary of that set-up, with Aaron doing all the talking. Also, that price sounds ridiculously low, especially to include shipping. Trust me, I understand the puppy excitement but (as others have said) you don't want to jump into the pool before you check and see if there is water in it!!! It might be a good idea to slam on the brakes until you find out the info suggested by the other members above. And (at the very least) DO NOT buy a puppy from someone that you have not spoken to directly. Best of luck.
