If she was protective about her paws, holding the treat above her head while saying “shake” while shaking her paw distracted her from that initial discomfort. When I first started taking hold of her paw, she did nose my hand as if to say “what the heck are you doing,” but having the treat ever-present above her head seemed to distract her. I should mention too that Penny was sitting as I was teaching her.

I’ll have to try the “bow” trick. Another fun one I’ve found is “BANG!” where you point your finger like a gun, say “BANG!” and then watch as they roll over on their back. It’s pretty cute .

Fargo06: I wanted to mention to you that I recently designed a corgi-themed t-shirt that used Fargo as a model. He’s incredibly photogenic. I’ve attached a sample. I hope it’s a compliment to you.

Oh that is extremely cute!!!

Jessica, put the credit card down! LOL! You are worst than me and trust me, I am really bad when it comes to Dilly dooo! I also didnt notice straining for the paw trick but i will also limit the amount of times i ask him to do it.
Bonnie, one class we took they had us learn a trick, and dillon's trick was the bang- play dead trick. well once he learned it he thought this was great, he got lots of treats. so the following week i ask him for a down...and he flops over on his side, with a big GRIN! so much for getting him to laydown correctly- that took nearly a month to retrain him for a NORMAL down LOL!!
SO very CORGI!

Milo is not protective with his paws. I always played with his paws early on since he was young.

Milo knows how to give us his hand and so good at it that we don't even have to ask sometimes.

My trick: Have your corgi in the sitting position. Hold a treat and say "hand" and lift his hand/paw to his eye level. Say good boy/girl and give the treat. Do this repetitively and consistently. Eventually, he/she will know it. It took us 2 months but not consistently doing it. It worked and now, he gives us his right or left paw when asked. He's so good at it he does while standing, laying down, or lying on his back.

Good luck!

Chip learned the dead dog trick in class and went belly up but I just can't force myself to do it with him. My heart does a flip flop every time I said it in class. I do have to admit that I have now lied on go corgi - My husband was going through the sit command with Maybelle tonight (feeding her steak) and Chip sat up on his little fanny and did a perfect beg stance. Don't know where he learned that from unless he watched my sister's Marci. She is a chronic beggar. LOL Will that hurt their back????

The trick is not that hard to teach to a hungry corgi. I had him lay down and then held the treat in a way that made him go on his side, then click and treat. i would kept doing it a few times until he would just flop on his side. All the while i would be pointing my finger at him. finally i added the word bang. The more dramatic he did it, the more excited i got and he fed off of my excitement. Now i say bang and he groans and flops to his side with his tongue hanging out...such a drama king... LOL! Jessica, when we do a play day with the cousins, i will show you... you will love it.

I started teaching Chip the crawl trick tonight. Real easy, put them in a down and say crawl and hold a piece of steak at the end of their nose and move it slowly away from them. chip crawled real good. Also, I am teaching him to pray. Started that tonight also. Get a little stool and teach them up with a piece of steak (it has to be a good treat) and then work them in a prayer position. So far, Chip will do the up on the stool. Just the front part of him. My baby is so smart.

Fargo06: Of course you can have a shirt! Free! It’ll give me the perfect reason to order a shirt to see how they turn out (it’s a cafepress thing). I’ll send you a private message by tomorrow about that.

Thanks Jessica for suggesting that someone upload some “dog trick” media. I’ve uploaded a couple of files to my YouTube account. The sound/picture quality isn’t spectacular, but you get an OK visual. Penny was tolerant while I juggled the camera and her treats.

Penny was spayed 10 days ago and just had her stitches out today. You might notice that she’s missing some of that cool abdominal fur Corgi’s seem to have.

Also, Dillydoodle’s method for teaching the bang/play-dead trick is close to what I used.

"Gimme your paw" and out goes Ruby's paw without fail everytime. In fact sometimes when I have a treat she is getting ready to stick out her paw. ruby doesn't mind me touching her paws. If she is laying down and I grab her back paw she will start licking my hand!

Great video! My hubby saw the Bang trick and started working on that this morning! I taught Ace to shake and high five very early with no problems. He loves to do tricks for treats! He can also roll over (switch is really helping with the Bang trick) speak, stand-up, and I'm working on the putting the treat on his nose. I love the tricks. They are very fun to do. I just have to talk Ace into doing them without treats all the time!
