Real long living

I have posted this here because it might deserve more general viewing and comment.

I have only today uncovered a partially Pem Corgi that is 22 years old and still going strong.
Unfortnuately the Corgi is a cross-bred but is at least 50 percent Corgi and looks very much like a fluffy Pem.
The dog is named Prince and had a lovely happy smile for the camera. He lives in New Zealand.

Are there any questions any member would like me to ask the owner.

Linda (Corgimom) has already provided some questions to be asked; What is the other half, what has been his diet, and how active still.

You can bet your bottom dollar that Prince is in no way overweight.

Any dog past 15 is doing very well and any dog past 20 is amazing.
The oldest dog that ever lived reached 26 oe 27.

I will post photos on Go Corgi when I get them from the owner.

Michael,

Please do provide us with some pics and more information. I know most of the time, genetics have a lot ot do with longevity and good health. But the rest is maintaining and upkeep. Do let us know!

Got to chat with the owner of this "real long living' dog only this evening and here is the result.

Princess is 23 year old on December 12.

She is a Corgi-cross owned lovingly by Jillian of Whangarei in New Zealand's far north.

Jillian does not know what the other breed mixture is but between her and me we think Princess is a Pembroke Corgi- Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie) cross. She is all-white and no bigger than a Corgi - she just looks like a fluffy Corgi.

At 23 (in just a few weeks), Princess has very good eyesight - only a slight cataract in one eye - and excellent hearing. Trully quite remarkable. But she has some athritis in her legs and she does have bronchitis but her greatest problem - and one which will eventually end her life - is her heart.

When aged 17 - some six years ago - Princess had a heart murmer and ever since she has been on a daily dosage of Fortecor and Vetmedin - at a cost of $150 per month. The athritis is not delibitating and she still jumps up on the couch and onto Jillian's bed and plays the big white chief with the younger dogs in the house. She sleeps on Jillian's bed at night.

If Princess was 16 and not 23 you would say that she was pretty active for her age. She gets a daily walk for 45 minutes - some of this time is spent being wheeled in a pram and some of the time she is let loose to walk and run around for several hundred yards at a time.

Jillian says Princess has always had a balanced diet. Her meals consists mainly of steamed vegetables, cooked meat ( eg roast chicken, beef steak, steak & kidney) and either cooked brown rice or pasta (no salt). Princess does not like raw meat anymore, has never liked dry food (kibble) and never given canned food and never much liked dog roll. So she does not get, and seldom has had, processed food in her diet.

Princess was on a beef raising farm for the first 11 years of her life and she got a huge amount of exercise. She was never a herding dog but she was a great rabitter. She caught hundreds - killed them but never ate them.

Princess is described as very selfish, very happy and very gentle. She looks and acts like a princess and she still is very beautiful despite her age. She likes to kiss and nuzzle but only on her terms. Her coat gets professionally trimmed every two months.

A photo is on its way in a few days.

Jillian must be doing something right. She had another dog that lived til he was 20 and she has a cat that is presently 23 years old.

12 years is practically TWO lifetimes for a GD!! That's impressive!!
I can't wait to see a picture of Princess. I'm amazed at her longevity!!!

I only followed up on the Princess story for the benefit of Go Corgi members.
But I was speaking to the editor of a brand new New Zealand pet magazine called Met Pet and she wants the next issue to feature Princess including her photo on the front cover. Because it is little more than a Readers Digest-size magazine, Met Pet only needs about 250 words, so what I posted here will be almost sufficient for the item. The editor had in mind to focus on senior-aged pets and Princess is ideal because she is probably NZ's oldest living dog.

Does this mean we won't get to see a picture of Princess?

Or could you post it after next months magazine is published? Would love to see how a dog of this age looks. And I just looked back at the post and you initially referred to it as Prince(He), but I see it is really Princess, a female?

Here is Princess who celebrated her 23rd birthday on Dec 12, She is camera-shy so her ears are at half mast - they are often fully upright. One can see that she is very pretty and not at all like Attachment 700a grey, old lady.

Princess is beautiful!

Today is Foxy's 1st birthday, and I can only hope we'll be able to share many wonderful years together as Princess' family has with her.

Happy birthday to Foxy - and Foxy, tell your mum or dad, that the first big secret to a long life is: not to make me overweight, and the second big thing is exercise - I need plenty of it.

Just got the news from the owner that Princess, the half Pem Corgi -half Sheltie passed away today peacefully, aged 23 and a half years old. She was New Zealand's oldest living dog. The owner for 17 of her 23 years is heartbroken.
