Sleeping with eyes open? - 11-09-2006, 06:25 AM

Does anyone else have a Corgi that sleeps with their eyes open. Miss Gambler, while on her back and all four in the air, sleeps with her eyes open and they even roll back. I have noticed that this occurs during her deepest sleeps, not the naps. I also purchased the book, HOW TO LIVE WITH A NEUROTIC DOG, and sad to say, no help.

I think Missy Gambler just doesn't want to miss any of the action!

I have seen Dillon do this on occasion- however his eyes are only partially open and i do see the whites of his eyes only which totally freaks me out , so i end up waking him up, he will roll over or change positions and go back to sleep and his eyes end up closed...

It's normal. Even humans do that. I realize it happens to Milo like that too when he's really sleepy and tired. But, it doesn't last long and he closes his eyes completely again to sleep. No worries!

I simply cannot believe that humans or dogs sleep with their eyes fully open. Sorry, but that's just me. There was a case I heard about not long ago where a person's eyelids wre burned off in a fire and they had to give the person artificial eyelids among other actions until they could graft on new ones otherwise the poor person was unable to sleep. I have never seen a Corgi sleep with his/her eyes wide open. They are either asleep with their eyes shut or they are not (fully) asleep. Hoiwever some dogs can partially close their eyes and be asleep through having a third eyelid - which really is a clear membrane that provides protection for the eye and thus gives the appearance that the dog is sleeping with his/her eyes 'open.'

Very interesting.

There are times that I will come into bed at night and find Ruby on the floor by the bed not moving and apparently sound asleep with her eyes open.
