Tough toys
First off, sorry for not posting in a while. I've been really busy with school. Just to catch up, Dudley is doing great, almost nine months old now! He's gotten so big--31 pounds! Anyways, Dudley loves to chew (his toys, not my furniture). He loves carrying them around the house! Up to this point, I have been getting him soft, stuffed toys and those would last for quite some time before the stuffing would start coming out. Now, however, I give him a new toy and he has an arm or leg pulled off within the hour. So, I could use some suggestions for some tough toys that will keep Dudley busy longer than an hour or so. He never has been very interested in the Kong toys, but he will carry it around when he can't find anything else.
Thanks for your help! Jeni |

Leah & I were Christmas shopping for Emma & Chloe at Pet Smart last week and found something that looks pretty tough and tuff... actually Hubby found it but we picked out the one we liked the best. The are called Trophy Dog Toy by Coleman - don't know if it's the Coleman Camping brand.
They look like large stuff toys BUT without the stuffing. Seems to be made of that heavy fake fur material and was well made. The arms and body are one piece and the head is stuffed and sewn on tight. It has 5 squeakers - 4 for the paws and I have yet to find the 5th. We picked out the black bear! They also had a buffalo (almost got this one!) and there was a 3rd but can't recall what it was. They are expensive - $20 but it really looks indestructible. Em & Chloe love to play Tug and Chloe loves to chew on her stuffed toys so I think this will get a good work out.

Jeni At petco they have the "Hard Core Firehouse dog toys" that are made out of actual firehose material and I also saw some other tough canvas material toys there(but can't remember the name) Cody has one of those Chuck It Frisbees which is made out of a stronger canvas and he loves to toss that around. |

Here is a brand of toy that i found that works great, Dillon has yet to be able to tear it apart... The brand is called Tuffie's www.mydogtoy.com i have seen them in various pet supply stores, I do believe that I have seen them at petsmart and petco, but not 100%. I got him what looks like a three sided boomerang. It has squeakers in it and a little rattle in the middle. their toys are very tough. he has had it for about 8 months, plays with it but hasn't chewed it apart yet. I also found him one that was a stuffingless duck, just fuzzy fleece material and a few faux sueded beak and feet and has a big flat squeaker. He has chewed off the beak after much effort but not the feet yet and because there is no stuffing it is pretty neat and safe. I cant seem to find the brand, this week when i am out in the town that i got this toy, i will check again and find it so i can get you a brand name. There are lots of good tough toys out there, it just depends on what kind of material your dog likes. I found a couple tough ones by bamboo but Dillon is not a big fan and gives up on playing with that quickly.

Jeni,
We are glad to hear Dudley is growing so well! Ace is about 31 pounds as well. He is also a very big chewer. He can chew through just about any toy the same day he gets it. (That doesn't stop me from continuing to buy them like an idiot because they are so cute!) I will actually cut off the ears or any part that I know Ace will chew off immediately! We have noticed that Ace does not chew up the little stuffed toys like the big ones. We have gotten two different IQ games for dogs at Petsmart. One is a log with squirrels and the other a bone with rings on it. They both are stuffed and made as a learning activity for dogs. Ace loves the little squirrels and rings and plays with them all the time. They are small with little stuffing and squeakies. We saw the animal furs T-Gal mentioned but where afraid to try it out because it was about $20. If it works out for her maybe we'll try one too. Also, we have been trying out different types of bones for him to chew in place of toys. So far he can pretty much chew up any bone. We've been talking to Linda about another alternatives. Does Dudley like to chew bones such as nylabones? They make some pretty heavy duty chewing bones! |

We have the same little log and squirrels IQ game, and DIllon also loves the squirrels and doesnt try to rip them apart the same way as the larger toys. You know, went to www.petedge.com and ordered an 80 toy display of all fleece toys by zanies. Buying them in bulk meant i only spent about $1.50 with shipping per toy and he gets to rip and shred them up all he wants. Just another idea... I just take them away when the stuffing starts to be pulled out..they then go into the trash and i go to the closet where i have stashed these 80 toys and grab a new one for him to destroy.

The dog's favourite hard toys are their roller balls that contain hard food/treats & their kongs. For softer toys, they have each of these Puzzle toys. They tend to keep busy pulling the small squeeker toys out of the larger objects.
http://www.needsndesires.com/canadas...toy-puzzle.php For a tougher soft toy, I would say it is the type they have with velcro and removable little bag inside, it can hold a treat or a squeeker. The fabric is very tough.

My dogs are very tough on toys- they play tug with each other, and it isn't long until the toy is in two- but the ones I have found that stand up the best
are by "FatCat" they are stuffed, but are made of a canvas material. They stand up pretty good. I have the Suspicios Chicken and the Sheep on the Lamb...they are really cute. http://www.dogtoys.com/fatcat.html My two are really tough on toys- and believe it or not, the new toys put out by the American Kennel Club are great! I bought three different ones and they have all stood up pretty good. http://www.pet-dog-cat-supply-store....p/akcplush.php You can find either of these at most pet supply stores. -amanda

I also have a few toys from fatcats - Dillon loved the alligator and it lasted a good long time with him chewing on it - the other ones he loves by them are the crackler toys, there is a skunk, a rabbit and a silly chipmunk...they dont last the longest like the ones that amanda mentioned but they are fairly hearty ( they are also all canvas). Thanks for the tip on the AKC toys, i saw them and fluffed them off thinking they were going to be the same as all the other fabric toys ( only more expensive) I will now give them a try too..

Tuck has learned to start a small hole and keep picking at it until it becomes a bog hole. Next on the agenda is disburse all white filling on Mom's carpet (ughhhh!). So I avoid stuffed toys as much as possible.
I have 2 of the Tuffies toys. They are very good but pretty pricey. They are kind of quilted so Tuck can poke a hole in them and remove some stuffing but he hasn't completey distroyed them. Now that Lulu is with us, he suddenlt likes the rope toys - they can play tug. Beyond that it's rubber toys for my pack!

Ive been pretty lucky - The Girls are not too hard on their toys. There were a few missing ears or paws in their early puppyhood but they seem content to just chew softly on the material or squeak the dooky out of the squeaky ones. Em loves balls and fetch (again yeah!) but Chloe could care less unless she thinks Em is getting too much attention then she's all over it.
Chloe does have a taste for brat girl hands and leggs but ....

de stuffing toys is my dogs favorite game! Here is a typical 10 step lifespan of a new toy
!) New toy comes out of the bag and promptly Kate (the shepherd, and officail fun police) steals it from whomever I gave it to 2) Kate then squeaks it until it dies (approx. 2 minutes) 3) Kate drops it and goes in search of something better (i.e something that she hasn't killed yet) 4) Sam makes a mad dash for it, Wicca and he play chase for a while 5) Wicca cannot out run Sam so she will go and find an old boring toy 6) Wicca brings the old boring toy in front of Sam and makes him jealous- rolling on it, barking at it, throwing it up in the air, running around with it, all the while Sam has stopped playing with the new fun toy and is entranced by the old not so boring one. 7) Wicca drops the toy a fair distance from Sam and pretends she is not interested in either 8) Sam is still enthralled with the old boring toy, has completely forgotten about the one at his feet 9) He will make a mad dash for the one Wicca has "dropped" and you can see that he thinks he pulled a fast one on her 10) Wicca meanwhile has quietly grabbed the new one, started a hole and quickley de-stuffs it. It is quite an entertaining game, and poor Sam has yet to catch on. -AMANDA

Ditto Linda, the firehouse toys have been very sturdy for us. Darci will kill a new soft toy in 5-10 minutes. Rope toys seem to do pretty good. We have the chuck a duck frisbee, it only lasted about 4 hours here, Egan killed this one. LOL
